Generation TV Sessions pt. 5
Due to a truely rare occassion we were back in the studio for a consecutive night for the first time ever. The true fun was to begin, always my favorite time of all recording, doing the background vocals. We pretty much already know what we wanted being these songs were already road tested. The harmonies developed over time. After a "noorishment" stop at our favorite Wawa, we set down for business.
On "Girls With Boyfriends" we had a general idea of what we wanted. This is the time too when Philmore really shines with ideas for harmonies and helping us find the right pitch. He ended up providing a 3rd voice for Andy and I. I really thought Penny would do more backing vocals this time around but it wasn't the case. He really has come along in live settings. I know he helps me out when my fat ass is out of breath not only drumming but trying to sing. Andy already told me there's more stuff for him to sing on the next album.
"Psychotherapist" had some kinda weird sound when the 3 of us tried singing backgrounds. Sounded like a friggin' ghost or something! So Andy and I handled the majority of those vocs. Phil did come out at the end to help out. We also doubled up the vocs on this one to get a fuller sound.
"Never Feel Alone" had the "choir" in full effect. Lots of harmonies going on in this one. My favorite song of the album, it's the "hit".
On "Idiot For You" we had Andy double track his original vocal. He then added a couple harmonies with Phil (I was the assistant producer on this one ). I did have a suggestion for a lower "oh oh" on the last 2 lines that everyone dug. Turned out nice.
"I Saw Her At The Graveyard" had some weird "doo wop" thing going on that was thought up on the spot. At first I wasn't keen on it 'coz I was so used to how we've been doing it live. I really warmed up to right away though. Makes it sound fuller as Andy was trying to explain to me. This featured more doubled vocals as well.
"Jonny" had Penny finally stepping up to the mic with me & Andy to do some shouts of Jonny and the "heys". Fast and furious.
