ADD Pop Punk Fest, Holly City Family Center, Millville, NJ 7/6/07
What can I say? It was a great fucking time with awesome bands and good people. The after show party was legendary as well. So, on with the tale.
The day started off with J and Matty Prozac coming to the Sheckie shed to run thru their set with Penny who would be sitting in with them for the show. Andy and I were singing background vocals and it was decided there by J we'd repeat that later during their performance. From there it was time to load everything up. Penny and K took off to pick people up. J and Matty would be riding in the van with Andy with the backline. I'd be riding up with Martha, who came up for the show, with the drums kindly provided by Brad from Guerilla Mask.
We pulled up to the place to see the Hollywood Blondes and Johnie 3 already there. I liked the place immediately, a converted church with hardwood floors. Only problem is I knew it would become an oven once all the people filled it up, but what can ya do? The 2 Brian's were already there, Brian from Revelation Records who got the venue and Brian from Just In Case who was doing the sound for us. The other bands helped load the stuff in while Andy was off on a mission to rescue the kids who broke down at the Dennisville Wawa.
So we get everything set and ready to go. People eventually started filling in. The Sheckie kids made it. Matt, Judy, Sean, Ashley and our newest one Jimmy Odd. Mike and Lucy from Underground Vintage Clothing. Murdoch represented the local crew. Shields and Jessie showed up later as well. It was cool to see old friends and a few new faces. Honestly, I'm a little disappointed more people didn't come out. The crowd might have been smaller than at the Legion Hall last year, but their enthusiasm made up for it.
The Uncomfortables opened things up with a kickass set. Jeff with his blazing leads on his Gibson Explorer. They closed with Motorhead's Ace of Spades which brought the house down. The Rydells followed and had everyone dancing with their Ramones-core sound. Denny even thru Rydella in the set for me. The Hollywood Blondes were next. Stiv with his shades and creepy Teabagger flicking his tongue maniacally. Great set by those guys.
Our pals Johnie 3 were next. Jay made a cool little speech saying how it's been almost 2 years exactly since we first played a how together in "my son's" backyard. They had a few technical troubles, but it was fun. Jay spit a loogy up on the ceiling and we were all waiting for it to drop back down which actually took a song or 2 for, but it did and he caught it. The Prozacs were next with Penny on bass and the 2 disgusting "Prozettes" on backing vocals. Our chorography might have been off, but I thought we did good on background vocs. J played a few rarities they hardly ever bust out live and Penny did a damn fine job on the bass. The Hi Life followed and played a nice tight set. Angie was saying too how we first met while they were called Creepshow at the same backyard show 2 years ago. Fun set by them.
We followed and played a short but tight set that had everyone singing along. I had a great time up there and it was cool to see all the other bands who we friggin' love and admire out there having fun too. And yes, even Shane Problem joined in on backing vocs for a few tunes. Ah yes, "bromance" was in the air with NRL. Speaking of which, NRL followed us and played a night tight killer set. Shane even wasn't that much of a problem during it. Finally The Apers closed things out to end the show. Time was running out, so they only got 8 songs in. But what a set it was! Sebby Zatopek even joined in on bass for 2 Ramones songs including Havana Affair which absolutely tore the place up!
Thanks again to the Holly City Family Center for having us, Brian and staff from Revelation Records, Brian from Just in Case, all the bands, and of course the people who came out. Hope you had as much fun as I did!
But wait, that's not all, I have to mention the killer party back at Jen's house that Jen and Zinah lined up for us. A keg was tapped and ready to go. The Apers, J3, Blondes, Prozacs, and Shane Problem all were there. Beer flowed, shots were lined up, Matty Prozac was trying to hang with Jen and Z. Nobody, but nobody can out drink those 2, but he did a pretty admirable job. There was a trampoline out back that found J Prozac, Stiv and Penny bouncing around in. Jay from J3 joined in and dropped a couple elbows and other wrestling moves on Stiv. I was so friggin' tired and wound up passing out for a bit. When I awoke everyone was around me as Andy had just taken a pic as photographic proof. Alright, alright, Stiv and I are finally even. I can no longer bust on him for passing out 2 years ago. The night wound up with everyone drunkenly singing along to The Riverdales. We all said our goodbyes as they were all off in search of a cheap motel and Martha and I headed on home. Definitely was the party of the summer for me!
