The Royal Scoop, Front Royal, VA 2/10/07
This was supposed to be the first date of our "road trip to Mardi Gras" tour, which fell thru 'coz we're all so friggin' broke. But Andy forgot to cancel the date and we ended up getting the show set up. We figured what the hell, we had a great time there last November when we played, so let's do the 5 hour drive, get some BBQ, and have a fun show. The sad news is, not only wasn't there any BBQ, but the place is being renovated into an electronics store and it was the next to last show there. They're hoping to get another venue set up which I hope they do. They have a nice little scene going on down there in the mountains of Virginia. We had another fun time and great show. I hope we can back down in the area come the summer tour.
The ride down was filled with dopey sing-alongs since we had no boombox, Penny muttering "Varth" non-stop, and a freezing K, but overall it went pretty smooth. The ride into Front Royal is filled with some nice scenery to us flat landers and of course features the roller coaster ride road into town. We got there a little early and hung out. While the kids warmed by one of the jet engine space heaters, I was trying to avoid a cackling woman who kept coming over. Finally, a woman was giving me attention at a show and I didn't want it! LOL. Andy and I then took a brief walk around the downtown area and stumbled into an arcade that had a hungry, hungry hippos game we really wanted to play, but it was getting closer to the start time so we headed back.
Didn't catch the name of the first band, but they put a great show although the bass sounded a little out of tune to my ears. They got the crowd pumped up regardless. Their drummer was kind enough to let me use his snare while the drummer from Anarcoustic let me use his kit. I really do think it's time to upgrade to a bigger van or maybe get a trailer. But if I can keep using other people's kits, guess we'll keep on keeping on.
We played next and put on a good show. I actually came in a beat too early on the breakdown on "Radio Off" which cracked Andy up. What can I say, shit happens! We gotta get tighter with the intro to "Rock And Roll Radio" as well, it fell right into place though. Overall, I was happy as hell with the performance. The crowd was digging it too. People kept coming up to me afterwards telling how much they liked it. We're getting quite the following down there.
Hunger was now setting in afterwards and although I was disappointed in no BBQ, there was homemade chili that hit the spot. Got me a big cup and sat down by the merch listening to the acoustic duo of Tommy & Byrn. Felt bad for them as it got a little noisy in there, but what I hear I liked. The next band Anarcoustic was the one that blew me away last night. Punk rock with acoustic guitar? It fucking works and was great! Look 'em up on my space.
After their set, I was fading fast, the long ride down was starting to sink in and I was getting sleepy. I didn't catch much of the last 3 bands, Adventures of Felix, Rally Vincent, or Mischief Brew. I feel bad about that, but I do like what I heard. We stayed to the end for K who wanted to see Mischief Brew really bad. I was delirious and laughing madly by that point. I did perk up a bit when I was told a nearby gas station had moon pies. We made it our mission to go there afterwards.
Cripes, it got fucking cold! We went to load up the merch and of course Andy parked at the farthest spot. So we get back inside and are hanging out in the corner spot we found out front. A cute girl asks for a CD so Andy goes out and gets one only to find me and Penny laughing madly as she's disappeared out into the crowd. That led to much more laughter on the ride back.
So now the show ends and we stumble back out into that cold. K is literally shaking from shivering so much waiting for slowpoke Andy to hobble along to unlock the van. We all pile in and I'm in the back this time with K to keep her warm. I swear she'd slice my belly open and crawl inside like a Taun-taun from Empire to get warm. So we made our way over to the said gas station and loaded up, and I mean loaded up on moon pies, candy, combos, chips, drinks, etc. etc. Andy throws a bag of Sun Chips to me which accidentally nailed some angry little Mexican in the head as he was walking out. I was going "he's gonna beat you up!" Andy's pleading "Please don't beat me up!". Luckily, he kept on movie. So we pile back in and start wolfing down our goodies. Andy takes off and almost gets us into an accident being so into his moon pie. From there it gets fuzzy as I fell asleep except for me pissing in my milk bottle in transit as I had to go so bad. I kept waking up to Andy mumbling "break, stop, turn" over and over. Quite the friggin' adventure this trip was!
Thanks again to Jizm, Matt, Rush, the lady who runs the place, all the bands, and especially the kids. We loves us the Front Royal crowd!
