Back to the studio
We're using a new studio this time called "The Motherless" over at the Burleigh storage sheds. You wouldn't even recognize it as a shed once you get inside with a hardwood floor entry, carpeting, and friggin' Japanese paper lamps hanging. Nice vibe and we felt comfortable immediately. We actually started Monday night by setting up my drums and getting the levels down. Even removed the front bass drum head so we could get a mic right in there for a better sound. Everything is being recorded digitally and it's a real treat just having 32 tracks to start with instead of 8.
We're recording only 6 tracks this time. 4 will be on an upcoming Cabana 1 Records 4 band/4 song split scheduled for a summer release, the other 2 we can use for any comps that come along. Here's the song list.
1) Something's Wrong With My Brain
2) Knucklehead
3) Retarded
4) Spoiled Junky College Girl
5) Not Gonna Miss You
6) My Life's Crumbling
We got there around 6 last night to get the ball rolling. Our producer for the session, Chris, is a rather quiet fellow. We're used to the angry wisecracking "voice of God" Philmore in our cans giving us our orders. We decided he looks like a tall Frodo from LOTR. So we started busting his balls and before too long he busting 'em back and fitting right in. He was also unleashing deadly vegan farts that thankfully I couldn't smell with my sinus problems, but my band mates felt the full effect. He came up with a funny nickname for us, spaghetti and 2 meatballs.
The first order of business was getting the drum tracks down. Andy and Penny were playing along on dummy tracks to guide me. Since we're so tight with this set of songs, everything was a one take except the mega fast "Spoiled Junky College Girl" which took me 3 tries before I was happy with it. Next up was Andy laying down his guitar tracks. We were busting his balls the whole time because of how he was saying it would be easy with this new recording technique, but it seemed each song took him several tries. Even Frodo joined in on the action. But he soldiered on and got it done. Each song features 2 guitar tracks and only 2 feature an added 3rd part for "coloring", "Something's Wrong With My Brain" and "SJCG". We were trying some different octave shit on the last one that we decided to scrap and stay as is. Nothing but chainsaw chugging guitar for us dopes.
Only took 3 hours to get this much down. Next up will be Penny doing his bass tracks and then Chris likes to mix the instruments before adding the vocals. Hopefully we'll be going back next Tuesday for that. I think this is really gonna come out sounding great.
