Clash Bar, Clifton, NJ 12/30/06
This was billed the "goodbye to 2006 punkfest". Cool bar and cool bands. The other dopes wanted to get on the road early as we had like a 2 hour ride to get there, so we were out the door by 4. Unfortunately. I noticed I forgot my friggin' drum throne on the way over to pick up Penny and the girls, so we had to go back to the shed. Not much in equipment we had to bring for this one, Andy brought his cabinet and head. All I needed was my cymbals, kick pedal, snare, throne and sticks. Penny would be using an amp there. I recently found out Penny gets car sick in the back so I was tucked back there among the equipment, cushions and pillows with the gals, can't complain about that huh?
We had a dinner stop and still managed to get to the place too early. So Andy climbed in the back as well and it would up like a fucking game of twister back there. Penny was busy increasing his brain power with that game for the Nintendo DSL whatever the fuck it's called. My back was starting to ache so I needed out and by that point the place was open. The place was kinda small, but definitely had a good vibe to it. We would be playing first, so I put my stuff on the stage waiting for the other bands and headed to the bar for some Yuengling on tap. They had the new "Dawn of the Dead" on demand on the TV for our viewing pleasure.
Finally, the other bands arrived and it was time to set shit up. Said hello to the other drummers and helped set it up and then line up to my liking. While leaning over I heard that dreadful ripping sound when you know you split your pants, so there I was trying to cover up LOL. I then sat around hoping no one would notice while drinking even more beer. We went on around 10:15 and played a nice tight set, mainly for the other bands gathered at the back. It was typical all guns blazing with hardly a stop, but we got applause when we did. I was well hidden behind the snare, LOL!
The Heshers were on next and played a really good set. Hard to categorize their sound, Punk with almost a classic rock sound leaning towards Cheap Trick. Either way, it was tight and catchy as hell. The Von Ghouls wrapped things up with a rockin' set. It was hard to categorize their sound as well, Punky with 60ish almost surf vibe. A few songs reminded me of the Groovie Ghoulies. I was a little disappointed not to get a few bucks for gas money, but at least we met 2 more cool bands and the place said they'll have us back, so all in all not a bad night.
Thankfully I slept for most of the ride home. We did stop at one of the scariest rest stops ever and had crappy BK food. I wasn't bothered by it, but Andy kept envisioning someone bursting in and emptying a gun on the place. Such is traveling in the middle of the night in Jersey.
