Royal Scoop, Front Royal, VA 11/18/06
Definitely was a fun show and worth the drive. I don't think the kids knew what to make of us at first as it's always tough hearing a band for the first time, but they were starting to get into by the end.
We were on the road by 9:30 AM. It was a beautiful crisp Fall day. Was nice to have the temps to where they should be this time of year. We hit a minor traffic delay on 95 due to some construction but it wasn't nearly as bad as some of the rush hour traffic we hit on the other shows earlier in the week. Front Royal is about an hour west of DC. We were in the Appalachia Mountains out there. We had to do some 2-lane mountain road traveling into town that made Andy kinda nervous.
We had trouble finding the place so Penny was sent on foot patrol again. He led us to it. We really couldn't be at fault, as the place wasn't marked that well. We met the owner who was real sweet. We got the gig originally thru J3 by way of Matt who was cool; we also met the dude putting on the show, Rush, who was a helluva nice guy. The actual room we would be playing was behind the shop in a back room. It was dark and musty, concrete and brick. Perfect in my opinion for a show, especially compared to the "sterile" environment we played the night before.
The first band playing was called Mattress Police. They had a slight ska sound to them. I enjoyed their set a lot. Their drummer was kind enough to let me use his kit as we would be playing next. I switched over to my cymbals and kick pedal while Andy and Penny got set up. There was a pretty good turnout, 60 or so kids, kinda reminded me of a Legion Hall show. At first I don't think they knew what to make of us, but at least they were all up at the front. As the set went on I saw a couple kids dancing and bopping along. Afterwards we moved a bit of merch and were getting a lot of compliments so I knew they dug us. Rush gave a nice bit of gas money that was totally unexpected. We couldn't thank him enough. He definitely wants us back and we'll be more than happy to.
I wanted to watch the next act, but hunger took effect and I wanted to try some of that authentic BBQ pulled pork sammiches they were selling. Damn, it was so good! But I dearly paid for it later and had to get Andy stop for some Tums! I wished we could've hung out for the whole show, but we had a long drive ahead of us and Andy wanted to make it home that night. So we wound up saying our goodbyes and were on the road by 7:30. A ways into the trip I had Penny sit up front and actually got some sleep for once in the van. Thanks again to the Royal Scoop, Rush, Matt, and all the kids for having us!
