Just got back in town, here's my blog from the last 2 shows...
Oasis Pub, New London, CT 11/14/06
Here we are, back on the road for an even smaller mini-tour. The whole idea was to be playing with Johnie 3, who due to circumstances beyond their control, couldn't make any of the shows. Didn't think I would either for awhile with my boss getting sick, but due to it being a slower time of the year at my job, we were alright. It's winding up being only 4 dates. We had a Maryland date fall thru awhile ago and the "Punkstock" show we found out was cancelled the day before the show was taking place.
The crew this time besides us included our buddy Kite due to K being up in college. We had more room in the van for these 1st two shows 'coz I didn't my drums. Wound up getting on the road around 1:45 yesterday. According to Yahoo maps, it would be about a 5 hour drive to our first show at the Oasis. Things were going good until we hit some NYC rush hour traffic. We also had a pit stop to get something to eat and got into town a little before 8. We were having a helluva time trying to find the street we were supposed to get on, so Penny and Kite got out and went on foot patrol looking for it. A few minutes later Penny comes wandering back and jumped in to lead us there. After running a red light and going the wrong way down a one way street, we were there in front of the pub. Shane from NRL was already inside just starting on his way to becoming Shane Problem. I really liked the layout of the place. It was pretty small, but long and narrow. The stage was kinda frightening. The front part you had to climb a step ladder just to get to it. It was shaking under Andy and I's girth, so it was pretty nerve wracking being on there. The drums and amps were stashed in a little cubby hole behind it. It was definately a tight fit being in there, but was kinda fun. The place already had a fan at the ready, so I was more than happy.
Eventually the rest of NRL showed up as well as Jay Prozac. We were waiting on Matty Prozac to arrive. In the meantime it gave Jay and Penny more time to work out songs. Yup, our own Penny would be filling in on bass for The Prozacs for this show! He already had a cheat sheet ready to go with chord changes ready to go. So at least he had more time to brush up. Dave Timeless from NRL started setting up his drums. They wound up being the kit for all the bands that night.
Matty showed up and it was time to get rolling. The Prozacs would be playing first and went into a great set playing a lot of songs they hadn't even played in awhile. Penny was playing like he'd been in the band forever. Simply an amazing job! More and more people kept trickling in and having fun. They wouldn't let them leave the stage with out a final encore of The Ramones "Blitzkreig Bop". We were supposed to play next, but Shane wanted NRL to, so they did. It was better anyway as Penny could use a break. They would be filming for their own upcoming DVD. I told Shane bluntly I wouldn't pull any punches as I usually do if he gets too drunk to play. He might have been drinking, but I thought he played a great show and all of NRL was totally kick ass! I still had to poke fun at their choreographed stage moves though.
It was then our turn up. I climbed the step ladder hanging on for dear life and then made my way to the cubby hole. It took a little bit to get Dave's low rider drum kit to where I could play it. But soon enough was ready. It was a little sloppy at first. I totally messed up the beginning of "Cut Marks" so we started it over. But as the night wore on and we warmed up, it got stronger and stronger. NRL, The Prozacs, as well as the other patrons just wouldn't let us leave the stage so we were playing encore after encore. It really turned out to be the most fun show since the 6/15 Legion Hall gig. An amazing night!
Afterwards, we all decided to go to a Denny's down by where Ben from NRL lived. So it was one big caravan following him. Wound up being 10 people strong. Shane Problem went above and beyond the call of his usual dopiness by being totally obnoxious the whole time in there capped off by him getting mouthy with the manager as he was leaving. Kite jokingly said "I'd call the cops on him" and the guy did! So we were hightailing it out of there. Jay was trying to stash Shane's van in front of a quikmart. We just followed Ben back to his house where we would be crashing for the night. As soon as we got there we called Jay. At least he was OK and made it out. Sure enough Shane calls minutes later. I'm not sure of the story still, but I think Sharon might have gotten a DUI. Shane wanted Andy to come down and get him. All I remember is everyone saying they didn't want to wake Andy 'coz I passed out myself right afterwards. So I have no friggin' idea on the outcome. Guess I'll find out today!

I slept pretty well and didn't get up 'till around 11. We now had a dilemma on what to do about Shane Problem. He had to go get his work van which was still at the quikmart from the night before. Before we could decide anything, we had to get some grub. We made our run and Andy & Penny wound up going to get him. I struggled the whole time they were gone using Ben's notebook to check up on my space and write yesterday's blog. So they finally get back around 4 with Shane not far behind them. He told us the whole details on what had happened, the final outcome is the cops were just bored and being dicks so Sharon isn't going to get in any trouble (see her response on yesterday's blog).
We were on the road around 4:30. The place was about 1 hours from where we were. Of course we hit some rush hour traffic and got slowed down for a bit. Penny was gonna try to piss out the back window on Shane's van but couldn't manage to do it. The whole ride over we were just bagging on Shane and Kite, between the saying on Shane's van "Yeeeeah, we do that" or Kite and his friggin' soup, I don't know what was funnier. We pulled up to the place around 6:30. The Flywheel was a cool little place. Run by artists, they act as a combo coffee shop, art gallery, all ages show venue. We could really use something like that in our neck of the woods. They had a backroom area where all the bands were hanging out. There was some confusion as to exactly who was playing and when. Problem was most of the bands would be sharing equipment and not all the bands were there yet! So the girl running the show was getting a little miffed. Finally we got some sense of order, drums were set up, amps borrowed, and the show was on.
The Blackouts played first and had a nice set capped off with a Misfits medley. NRL wanted to play next 'coz Timeless was sick so they wanted to play and run. I missed a lot of their set as they were way too loud, I mean brutally loud for that small room. The crowd really dug 'em though. Us dopes were in the 3 spot and played a tighter than tight show. I was happy Jay Prozac's GF Andrya finally got to see us play. I really had a fun time playing, making dopey faces and having fun. An acoustic based outfit called Fabric Softener Sheets was next. As you, I don't like saying anything bad about another band. I give mad props to anyone who's brave enough to get up in front of a crowd and do their thing. Let's just day I didn't dig 'em and leave it at that. The Prozacs had their regular bassist back and really kicked some ass! I got to hear a lot of the new songs and they all were excellent. The Uncomfortables closed the show and played a great set. Jeff is a friggin' animal and broke 2 guitar strings. Luckily Ben was around and let him use Shane's guitar to finish their set. A great night and fun show for sure!
Afterwards, we followed Jay and Andrya and stopped at a 50's style diner near their house for an after show meal. At least it was nice to know there wouldn't be any "Problems" this night! Cripes, it was one funny story after another at the table. Thought Kite was gonna need his puffer from laughing so hard. And yes, Andy should get that "Super Heavyweight Champion" wrestling belt tattooed to his stomach!
