The Black Crowes - Starland Ballroom, Sayreville, NJ 11/8/06
I originally bought 3 tickets for myself and "my son" and "future daughter in law" (Mike & Renee). As the date kept getting closer and I still hadn't heard anything back, I went down to Suburbia the day before the show to confirm and thought it was all cool. So I was pretty surprised when I found out Renee couldn't make it and "my son" wasn't that into it if she wasn't going. Believe it or not, Kite stepped up to the plate and volunteered to go with Meghan. LOL! Guess he regretted it later! At least he almost made it thru the 1st set, Meghan made it into the 2nd set. Hey, at least they tried and they still have their punk rock cred! I'm just happy they looked out for me and got me to the show.
Getting there was an adventure in itself. We got the directions from the Starland site itself. We took Parkay exit 125 and it got hazy after that. After a succession of U-turns and a fucking ignorant NY driver who wouldn't let us over, we found our way to the place. The Star Parking worked like a charm and we found our way in.
The place was pretty small and packed! I didn't plan on going up front anyway (I learned my lesson after the Johnson City show!). We found a nice spot right behind the soundboard which provided clear sight lines for most of the night (occasionally a guest would wander in and block the view, but thankfully they didn't stay long). The sound was great to my ears back there. And the railing was a more than welcome relief to lean against/hang onto as the show went on. All the people packed in there made the temps rise pretty fast. I had a bottle of water that they made me toss out before letting me in. Thank God for my Vicks cough drops to at least provide some kind of moisture. I sure as hell didn't want to lose my spot, so I dealt with it. I was offering to buy water from the sound crew and security at $5 that went on deaf ears. Maybe I should've offered $10!
I'm a member of the Crowes official messageboard, but hardly post there these days 'coz negativity rules on there for the most part. They had a "roll call" as to who was going, but I've put my name on there for previous shows before and somehow didn't find my way there, so I thought it was best not to this time around. There are some really cool people though I always wanted to meet and as fate would have it, I did.
I first noticed one of the regulars "Bucket" of to my left. I then saw "Bobby Suede" and thought the time was right to introduce myself. Sure enough, I got the meet "Sofa Chick" and "Cherri" as well! They were the Philly crew from the board I always wanted to meet, so that was pretty cool. I know Cindy will be happy! Cherri especially did not dissapoint. She was loud and knows how to have fun at a show. Although I think she might've contributed to Kite's migraine! LOL!
Now onto the show! Here were my highlights....
Cursed Diamond opener
Finally getting my 1st Sister Luck (6 shows in). Paul ripped on this I might add
Heavy - Haha to the haters! I dug the arrangement and "sassiness" of the sistas!
Dirty Hair Halo - 'nuff said!
Jam before Thorn - Mellow and "Floydish"
Basically all the 2nd set esp. Waiting Guilty and the nastiness of Horsehead (underated tune in my opinion)
I was sweaty, drained, and tired, but you couldn't wipe the smile off my face! After the show I met a couple more Amoricans from the message board, Higherthanthemoon (who I play in one of my many Amorican fantasy football leagues and unfortunately missed a lot of the show 'coz of hellacious traffic coming in from Rhode Island). I also got to briefly meet "Mr. Bunny" and shook his hand. I saw "Duder" as well, but didn't get the chance to say hello. I wanted to hang out some more, but I really really needed to use the head as I was holding it in all show long. Friggin' one bathroom was blocked off, so after I made my way all the way over to the other side of the room to take my piss, everyone was gone. At least I did get to put some faces to the names and say hello.
I wandered my way out to the car and Kite and Meghan where waiting patiently for me. A medal of honor to those 2 Punkers who dealt with it to make my ass happy! Of course we got lost for awhile on the way back too. As countless following of Parkway signs, we finally made our way back on around Exit 89. It was pretty smooth sailing once we did that. Kite played driver too, so extra props for that as well.
Now it's wait and see what direction the band will take. Who will be the new guitarist (Paul was only temporary for the Fall tour, although I wish he'd stay). New album is on tap for next year, so the Crowes will go on! Fuck the naysayers, I'm still aboard for the ride!
