After work Monday I headed right up for my friend George's b-day/going away party. Still kinda stunned by scope of his drug problem. At least he is sober now and will better himself in North Carolina. So I got to hang out with him and his friends and family.
Got to hang out with my former bandmates Dan and Edwin there as well and we even had a little acoustic reunion. We never did settle on a final name for the band. We went from Neurotic Duck to Gadzooks amoung others. I still tell people it was the band that I wish would've taken off. Strong Grateful Dead/Jam Band vibe with blues and reggae thrown in for good measure. Anyways, it was good playing with those guys again and revisiting some songs I haven't played in years. Here's a rundown on the songs we played...
1) The Ride - Menzel Brothers
2) Little Red Rooster - GD
3) Edwin's E 7th Instrumental
4) Eyes of The World - GD
5) New Speedway Boogie - GD
6) Easy Wind - GD
7) Big RxR Blues - GD
8) Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon
9) Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan
10) Been All Around This World - GD
11) Monkey & The Engineer - GD
12) And The Race Is On - GD
13) Deep Elem Blues - GD
14) Helpless - Neil Young (me on acoustic)
15) Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie (me on acoustic again)
16) Walking Blues - GD
17) We're Gonna Groove - Led Zep
18) Go On With Your Badself - Motherflower
19) Ain't No Sunshine (instrumental) - Bill Withers
20) Peggy-O - GD
Along with several other songs we played a few bars of. I know a lot of the Dead songs were covers, but I don't know the original artist or was too lazy to look them up!
I really do wish the best for my friend. I think he really will get himself together in his new surroundings and with the love of his new woman.
Tuesday was like a national holiday to me. Why you ask? Well because Madden 2007 hit the shelves! I was lucky enough to get 1 of the 3 copies EB Games had that wasn't reserved. Before I could dig in, Andy had called me up and invited me to his brother Sluggo's b-day party. So I got to sit down at a Chinese food feast and eat Mom's homemade German chocolate cake for dessert. Ended up watching part of Andy's new Ultraman DVD set. A dream come true no matter what some naysayers are going on about on Amazon. I've had the bootleg version on video for years, this is worlds better! I'll be getting my own copy soon.
The local paper came out yesterday with the story on the shows at the Legion Hall being cancelled. Here's a link if you want to read yourself...
Legion pledges to end behavior problems....
What's upsetting is the article paints a very one-sided opinion I think. It bothered me enough to write an email to the author. Here it is...
"Hello Al, My name is King, drummer for the local group The Sheckies. We've had the pleasure of taking part or putting on 5 different shows at post 198. Not once was there trouble with fighting, drink or drugs, or "boisterous gangs roaming the streets". I can't speak for the 8/11 show or any of the other shows that we had nothing to do with, all I can tell you is we worked really hard to make it a fun, safe environment and each show we had was a success. You can even contact Jim from the Legion to verify this.
I understand the concerns of the neighbors. It's just upsetting that the bands and promoters who did do a good job of keeping order have to suffer because of the irresponsibility of a few. Our 6/15 show was a great success with bands coming from 4 states and even one from Rotterdam, Holland. They still talk about how impressed they were with the crowd from such a small area. We had another show planned for 8/26 with more out of state acts that now of course is cancelled.
The shame is there were kids who came there for the music, who were respectful of other people and property. There isn't much for them to do around here, especially in the off season. Now it seems we may never be able to find another all ages venue, especially in light of the article."
My buddy Murdoch wrote an excellent letter that I hope he sends in to the editor. Several of our fans are upset as well. I've encouraged to let their voices be heard as well. We'll see if this will make a change.
