Tour diary (pt. 6)
(written 7/17/06)
I'm sitting in the bathroom of Room 202 of the Comfort Inn near Grove City, PA right off exit 113 of I-79 South. Yes, it happened. The van broke down yesterday. We had pulled into a Sheetz gas station less than 30 miles from where the show was to gas up. Andy goes to start it and it's just not catching. Might be a starter problem, who knows. All I know is The Shuttlecocks came and rescued us to play the show and it was the best show yet hands down.
The day started off great at Jonny & Shannon's. She made us chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast and even did our laundry for us. She also packed us a bag of goodies for the road. We couldn't thank them enough for the hospitality.
We were on the road at noon. It was supposed to be a 4 hour drive totaling 240 miles all thru PA. It ws extremely long and monotonous, a non-stop view of a sea of green. It seemed to be the most exhausting part of the trip yet. I was so friggin' happy to get off I-80 to start the final leg of the trip when the shit went down.
After sitting there for several minutes in disbelief hoping it just needed to cool down, we called up The Shuttlecocks and Johnie 3 to let them know the situation. That's when it was decided the show must go on. Pete & Zac from The Shuttlecocks were coming to get us! We let the staff at Sheetz know what was going on and they were nice enough to let us keep the van in the parking lot overnight. The Comfort Inn was within walking distance so if we were gonna break down we couldn't have picked a better spot. Pete & Zac showed after awhile and we unload our luggage, merch, and some essential gear for the show, load it up in the SUV they brought, push the van away from the gas pumps and into a back parking space, and then we were off for Harmony, PA.
Cripes, those boys are but babies. They're both 16 and told us their bassist is 14. Unreal. K is sandwhiched between us 2 fatties. Penny is in the back on top of the gear. It was a wacky ride over there and I thought we were frightening them at first.
We pull up to the Harmony museum. The show was in a hall at the back. First people we see is J3. Was good seeing our buddies again. We get inside and The Checkers are finishing up. Those guys are from NJ too, up near Trenton. Sounded great from the few songs we got to hear.
It was decided we'd play next. Zac was kind enough to set up and let me use his drums. Penny had brought the monster bass amp. Andy was gonna use Pete's amp. Jay put a beer in my hand, and we were off. I even had a mic for the 1st time all tour and said "what the hell". I was feeling this show from all the dilema. It was time for me to add backing vocs. We went in all guns blazing. It was another small crowd of about 25, but they were way into into. I rather play small shows were everyone is into it than big shows where people are just there to be seen. It was the best show yet!
Afterwards I'm cooling down back by the merch table. I finally got to meet Jonny friggin' Rally. He was a helluva nice guy and seemed to really like us. Do I smell a future Rally Records release? Would be sweet. We moved a nice bit of merch. We had mentioned the van problem and I think people really tried to help out with the cause. We got so many compliments after the show too. Always nice to hear.
J3 would be playing next, but before they began I was pouting to the now Billy Idol lookalike Myke how I was upset that he didn't kiss me at the 6/15 show but would kiss an Aper. He called me up for a kiss and I slipped him the tongue much to the amusement (or was that disgust?) of the crowd. Then they tore into their set. They sounded awesome as usual. Later in the show I asked if "Ohio Girls Are Easy" was on the set list. Myke said no, but they'd play it if I showed my dick. I replied "I don't think anyone collects minatures" into the mic but bargained if I licked my disgusting man teat would they and it was agreed. I did the deed again to everyone's amusement and they went into it. Great fucking show!
The Shuttlecocks finished things up and just blew us away! They were fucking tight. They played their song "She's Too Fat For Me" and afterwards I told 'em "You'll learn oneday son that fat girls give the best BJ's"! They wrapped things up and we said our goodbyes hoping for a miracle to get us to the 2 Ohio gigs.
Pete & Zac drove us back to the van. Hope Pete didn't miss his 11 PM curfew! K and I walked over to the hotel while Andy & Penny loaded up the van. I was expecting the worst for the 4 of us in a room, but it was only $72! Much better than the $100 Andy paid in Maine. So the battleplan is to call AAA first thing this morning and pray for the best!
