Tour diary (pt. 5)
(written 7/16/06)
Hello from the 2nd highest point in PA., Summit Hill. Here we are at Jonny, Jonny, Jonny & Shannon's house. Still a little sleepy, but well fed after super taco night. Yahoo maps finally let us down by telling us to take a wrong turn on 443 and putting us out of the way for a bit.
Penny is a much better navigator than me. He's the unsung hero so far between loading and unloading the van and reading maps. Andy of course is the little engine that could, driving every mile so far.
Last night's adventure was driving up winding mountain roads in a fog so thick you could barely see the road ahead of you. So once again in keeping with the "worst of" theme, it was the worst fog we've ever drove in.
The gig last night was pretty funny. We played in front of 4 people, well 5 including the sound guy. 3 girls actually paid, the 4th was the drummer for Phantasm (We couldn't thank them enough for letting us use their drums and amp cabinets). But those 3 girls were won over quickly and it made it all worthwhile. So I had fun regardless.
Earlier that day we spent time at Ben's house in CT. I'm pissed 'coz I got on his laptop and somehow fucked up where I couldn't thank personally the 10 new friends that had added us on My Space. I friggin' hate those touchpad mouse thingys. He grilled us up some hot dogs and we hung out shooting the shit and such. Penny took a crack at skateboarding the 1/2 pipe in the yard and thankfully didn't crack anything on him.
We left around 2:30 and with all the stops, made it to West Reading right before 8. We drove thru some lush PA. Dutch countryside. Didn't see no horse and buggies, but saw 2 Amish girls wearing bonnets riding bikes.
Hardbean Underground was indeed underground in the basement of a coffee shop. It was still pretty muggy and it took awhile for me to get comfortable. The venue looked more suitable for poetry readings and acoustic shows, but I liked it regardless. Story Of Ourselves played 1st. They were pretty good, but I was more concerned resting up than paying attention to music. I had really felt drained yesterday.
There was some confusion about who would be playing next, but since we were using their gear who were we to complain. There were more people originally, maybe 20 or so. They all bolted after the 1st 2 bands were done playing. I really did like Phantasm's sound a lot. Really hard to catagorize the sound. Guitar, bass, drums, & a DJ on turntables who also doubled up on percussion. Almost funky sounding at times. And since I'm not closed minded when it comes to music, I liked it a lot.
You already know about how it was like when we finally played. I still had fun and we played quite a few songs for the 1st time on tour. The girl who organized the show actually lost money so none of the bands got paid. And we made exactly $3 on merch sales. But at least we made those 3 new fans who we played our balls out to. That's what it's all about.
The ride to Jonny's was an adventure as I already mentioned. We've been wrung thru the wringer with all the adversities thrown at us, but here we are still kicking ass. The next 3 shows with J3 should make it up for these last few.
It was great to have that taco feast waiting for us. We all wolved it down. I really missed those 2 kids and it was great to see them again. We won't have much time to hang out though 'coz we got another 4 hour or so drive. At least we'll get some laundry done. Let's just hope there's no more screw ups from Yahoo maps!
