American Legion Hall, Cape May Courthouse, NJ 6/15/06
What can I say? The best local show ever! All the bands were fantastic, and much props go out to the Sheckie kids and everyone who came out. All the bands were telling me afterwards how our little town was the best stop on tour. Circle pits, dancing, everyone having fun, and no fights. You all deserve a round of applause!
We got there right around 3. NRL showed up not much long after that. It was good seeing Shane again and meeting Ben and Dave for the 1st time. The guy from the Legion let us in. He was telling me about trouble they've been having at shows. About "some devil worshippers with a pentagram on their flyer" (uh oh, East Coast Zombies!). Guess he didn't realize it was us.
Dom Piro from House Divided was kind enough to do sound for us. It was nice not having to worry about that for once considering our past track record with PA problems at the Legion.
So we sat around BS-ing and passing the time. It was getting closer to 5 and I was wondering where all the other bands were at. Finally J Prozac called Andy's cell explaining how they were lost. Him and K went off to get them. It turns out Mapquest is giving directions for a road that doesn't exist! The Leftovers had the same problem and wound up hanging out at the zoo for awhile. Finally Myke and Mikey from J3 showed up with Kevin Aper. Eventually everyone else arrived by 6. Turns out the rest of The Apers wound up going down to Cape May. At least everyone got there OK after all the screwups.
The crowd really built up nicely by the time NRL took the stage. My first time seeing the new 3 piece lineup. They really kicked ass! I'm proud of Shane Problem and company! The place became a sweatbox fast. Everyone would go outside for air after each bands set was done and we would have to gather them all back in. It was my first time seeing The Leftovers and The Prozacs. Each band blazed thru strong sets of pop punk songs that got the crowd up and moving and having a good time. J3 came up next and had me singing along. It was great seeing those guys again after that fun show we played in "my son's" backyard last year. Next up were the fucking Apers and they just blew eveyone away. Andy was singing along like a madman.
We wanted to close things out just in case it ran late or we got shut down. But as I said earlier, everything was perfect on this night. We went in with "Girls With Boyfriends" and it was no looking back. We played a fun but a little sloppy set. Of course all our Sheckie kids and friends came up and sang along. I also found out a new secret for drumming inside a sweatbox, keep pouring water over my head between songs. Shane and Geo helped with that. Shields kept chucking blowpops and empty water bottles at me. I told Kevin Aper to duck as I winged a drumstick at Pancakes. It was just an amazing time and everyone had fun!
The afterparty at Jen's house was off the hook! We promised all those fuckers a fun time, and I think we came thru. All the other bands were great people and fun to hang with. They all kept complimenting us on our set. Kinda blew me away as I though they all were much better. I got to do a shot with Kevin Aper and sang a doo wop song with him telling how "I'm the lonliest Sheckie". He really was impressed with us and promised to do his best to help us get signed and get some distribution, so we'll see what happens. Him and the rest of The Apers left to go gamble in Atlantic City, hope they had fun! The Leftovers had a grill fired up and gave me a burger. Jen later made us vegan snacks. Much alcohol was drank and many laughs were shared. The night ended on a sour note with Pancakes sucker punching Shields, so that broke the party up. At least we got in some fun times before that. Everyone kept telling us to go to the big Pop Punk fest in Baltimore tonight so we'll see what happens. I'm sure Andy will go. Again thanks to all the bands for a great show, and all the fans for making it the best show ever! - King
