I've been having a fun week after working my ass off the previous one 'coz of the golf tournement. The 6-6-6 party Tuesday night was great! Met up with old friends and met new ones as well. Props to Ralph and Derek for organizing it. We all met up at the old Douglas Fudge pavillion on the Wildwood boardwalk. All the old S.K.U.D.'s (S.kumbag K.ids O.n D.rugs). I was never really part of that group. I hung out there a couple times, mainly to track down "My Son" and Jen for their Mom back in the day. Fast forward 15 years, and I wind up knowing a lot of them thru the band.
We hung out there at the pavillion for awhile. One rent-a-cop kept walking by keeping an eye on us. When the bible thumpers started to set up shop near us we knew it was time to go. Wound up going to the Harbor Bar. Drinks were flowing, Slayer and old Metallica was being played by the DJ. Spent most of the evening hanging with Tina, 1st time we got to hang out in ages. I left around 11:30 but she promised she would stop by later. She kept her promise and spent the night. I had met her brother "Demon" during the party. He warned me about a shotgun wedding if she got pregnant! Guess he didn't know Tina and I have known each for 12 years now. I don't think a lot of people knew. At one point the group was 30 strong. I hope most can make it out to our show next week.
I worked my ass off on My Space yesterday contacting all the people who didn't respond to the invite for our ahow on the 15th. That's close to 500 people. I'm doing all I can to promote it. I think we are going to have a good turnout. I'm more worried about the after party. Our friends around here are involved in what seems a neverending soap opera, this person don't like that person and so forth. It's hard finding a "neutral ground" where most people would go. I want to show all these out of state (and country) bands a good time like we did for J3 last year, not worry about bickering.
Last night Andy, Greaser Steve, and I headed up to Atlantic City to see Jumpship play. A stop at White House Subs was in order first. I've never been there but the stories of the cheesesteaks and hoagies there are legendary. Sat down at the counter and munched on my hoagie while John, Paul, George, & Ringo holding a 12 foot sub looked down at me from above. Guess it was from '64 when they played AC. It was a damn good hoagie, the secret is the roll. But nothing will top the one I had at the Overbrook Deli in Philly years ago. That was the best one ever!
We got to the venue called "Le Grand Fromage". We're scheduled to play there in August with Jumpship. It was a tiny room, but had a good vibe. When we got there our friends from Guerilla Mask were there. They were on the bill as well. Got to chat with the bassist for Jumpship for awhile. Turns out he was a big fan of Ultraman and the like when he was growing up too. Guerilla Mask played 1st and put on a strong but short set. Next up was a band from Baltimore called The Cult Classics. They played a superfast Hardcore Punk set (and I do mean Hardcore, not the Metal-ish sounding stuff the kids call Hardcore these days). They reminded me a lot of Common Enemy. The singer was even wearing a CE shirt. They had a female drummer who just kicked ass! Was fun watching her play with the faces she made, she was way into it. Following them was Sparkle Motion from Mays Landing I believe. They played Hardcore Punk as well. The singer was a tiny little dude who was way into it. He was beat up by the end of their set. Jumpship finished things out. They played a strong set of more melodic punk. I like those guys a lot, but I'll admit they didn't blow me away like they did the first time I saw them at a show we played together in Somers Point last April. I remember them playing faster songs at that one. I guess I was still numbed by the intensity of the other bands. They dedicated a song to us and the singer almost fell face first while doing it, and a speaker got knocked over. Guess our bad luck gets passed on to others when they invoke our name!
Got a nice fat paycheck from the tournement last week, but would you believe no bonus? No one got one, first time ever that's happened. Guess they're telling us something? I was telling Andy we should organize somwthing where we all call out sick for oneday. Think they'd get the message then? That place gets worse and worse.
Well let me spend the rest of my day off doing my usual mindless internet searching....
