Somers Point Fire Hall #1, Somers Point, NJ 4/29/06
We had packed the van the night before. Andy and I would leave right from our job at 4. Kids went up with Tweety in the bug. Found the place pretty easy. Load in was quick. Since we were the first band to play we set up. I was going to play on a drum riser. At first I was nervous wondering if this shaky thing would hold my massive girth, but once I relaxed I got into the spirit of things and felt like friggin' Ringo Starr up there.
So it was basically just sit around and wait time. Time was going by. I thought the show was to start at 6, then 6:30, then 7, finally at around 7:15 the opening act Ian of Fire started playing. It was just a dude on his keyboards. Kinda sorta NIN-ish. He only played 3 songs and it was time for us.
I really had a great time up there and they way the riser was situated, I didn't have a mic for backing vocals. Hate to say it, but I prefer it like that. I think I'm finally passing the torch onto Penny for the backing vocals from here on out. Oh, I'll still add them in the studio, but it's just getting too much playing live. I get so much more into the drums now adding little fills here and there that I never had time for before because of doing the vocals. We kinda screwed up the intro to "Jonny" 'coz instead of my shouting out the "1,2,3,4", I tried clicking the in. Andy told me later a couple other times he had minor screw ups 'coz he was expecting spots where my vocals were to be at and they weren't there. We'll have it all ironed out before 6/15.
A few of our fans made the drive up to check the show out. 2 of them danced and sang along the whole time so that got me into it more. Think we won over some new fans as well. Andy told me later a promoter from Vineland liked us a lot. Hopefully we can get a show up there now out of this.
Jumpship played next and those guys were great! Reminded us of early 80's punk. Great set! Those guys were really down to earth as well. I think we might get an Atlantic City show thru them. I definately want to get them at a Legion show in the future.
I got to talk to my my space buddy Sophia. She wound up missing the show, but filled in the rest of her CD collection. I was teasing her a bit but it was all in fun. I also thanked our friend Kate for coming up and wishing her a early happy b-day.
Andy was getting tired and since we both had work the next day we left during the Just In Case set. I felt bad since it was those guys that got us the gig. If they read this I can't say thank you enough, we had a great time!
