First off, the good news. My sister is home from the hospital. It's looking like what caused her symptoms was related to that medicine she was taking. All the tests did rule out stroke or heart trouble. However, the MRI did show she may have a possible benign tumor near her ear. The name of it is an "acoustic neuroma". She has to have a follow up MRI to confirm. Kinda scary stuff when were talking possible brain tumor even if it's non-cancerous. All I can do is keep crossing my fingers and hope for the best.
The band played a show last night at the Hurricane. Here's the review...
Hurricane East, Wildwood, NJ 4/25/06
Talk about a stressful time. Between worrying about my sister's health, the incident of the day before, and stupidity at work, I was was ripe for a total flip out. Unfortunately, it was on Shane Problem over a cell phone and Andy. I think I also frightened some innocent bystanders. I can't apologize enough. But kids, we did learn a very important lesson. Do not, I repeat, do not approach King with anything that may raise his stress levels before playing a show. Such as....completely changing your tour plans around 1 show that you have less than 24 hours to make a decision by. This was not a good idea. Let's learn from this experience....
After I calmed the fuck down, it was rather a pleasant evening. My heart did almost kick in a couple times onstage, but what the hell, kicking the bucket while playing would be pretty punk rock huh? Anyways, this is a review so here goes...
The first band changed their name on the spot which I happen to forget already, so let's call them "the artists formerly known as Capt. Chaos and The Road Pirates". They featured #1 Sheckie Kid Sean on vocals, my trusty drum roadie Dustin on guitar, that kid Shane on bass, and drummer dude, I forget yer name, but he's a fellow fatty and he had a mohawk, so he's alright in my book. This was their first gig and let me tell you, they were so bad it was good! And I mean that in a good way! It was fucking punk rock stripped down to the core! They covered our own "Radio Off" amoung other punk covers. Later on this dude took over on guitar and played some songs on the spot. I think his name is Chris (sorry dude, it's been years), haven't seen him since the early 90's or so. Overall, I enjoyed their set. The fucking energy is there, they just need to harness it a little better.
Stryofoam Paradise came on next and played a good set. A couple troubles here and there, but they pulled it off nicely. They covered GG Allin's "Bite It You Scum" which I always appreciate. I saw Andy's old drummer Sandy from the Abnormal Adolescents days. Shame she didn't stay for our set though. Special thanks to SP's drummer for letting me use his kit which lead to us dopes.
Again, I appreciate I got to use his drum kit so my fat ass didn't have to lug my gear. Another lesson was learned tonight though as well, always have your own bass drum pedal in case of emergencies. That pedal was wound so tight there was barely any action in it. Beggars can't be choosers, so I dealt with it. It was leading up to being a great show regardless. I was hitting all my backing vocals no problems at all up until "Totally Worthless" when my heart condition almost kicked in. I don't know what it is, sometimes I guess I put a little more strain on myself playing this fast punk beat and trying to sing as well. Being a fat fuck doesn't help matters. I'm just glad Penny has gotten so much better at backing vocals. Takes the pressure off of me when shit happens.
Being baked under those stage lights wasn't helping matters either. Penny got them turned off so that helped a little bit. Don't know how those 2 dopes out front can manage playing in their leather jackets. I was on my spare tank by the end of the show. It was a pretty good one all things considered. When I got off stage Tweety and Greaser Steve were saying it was the best they've ever seen us play. Steve was going on about how something just happened during it and we took it to another level. Well, glad they had fun. If every show required me to almost die and play with a subpar bass drum pedal, I better retire now. I really should learn how to take a compliment, but it's hard when you yourself know you could've done better.
On the ride home Andy was telling me some yahoo was criticizing his vocals. Nothing wrong with constructive criticism (as you saw earlier), but don't give an attitude while doing it. Apparently this guy was a singer in a band. Doncha just hate bands that do the old "my dick is bigger than yours" kinda crap? Just kill me if it ever becomes a competition. I'm still in this game to have friggin' fun. And so far we've surrounded ourselves with bands that get it. So props out to "TAFKACCATRP" and Styrofoam Paradise.
