American Legion Hall, Cape May Court House, NJ 10/22/05
He's my report from the "Punk Rock Prom" show last night...
We got there real early right before 3. I paid George $10 to be my drum roadie (thanks George!) so he helped me lug in my stuff. It was basically sit and around and wait until the show started around 6. Doors opened at 5.
By 6 there was a nice turnout mainly all hanging outside. Took a bit to get the sound up. Matt then did a short drums & bass thing and then it was time for the first band Resting Eyes of the Riot to play. The place was packed. I don't what to call their music, hardcore, metal, whatever. All I know it was full of energy and impressive for such a young group. I liked it a lot. The hardcore kids were doing their spinning kicks which I really don't get, but hey, they're having fun and that's what counts. No one was getting hurt either. The table next to me was crashed into a few times, but it survived. Saw that kid George I used to work with. He was having fun. A great set!
The guitarist for In His Fall did a short set with just him and his guitar. Their drummer broke her wrist. We must jinx this group or something 'coz the last show we played with them she was fresh out of the hospital. Took some guts to just get up there and do it and the crowd appreciated it.
It was now our turn to get up there. We only got like 3 songs into it when our mics cut out. That was only the beginning, the mics kept cutting out during almost every song. Pretty frustrating but we tried to do our best in a bad situation. I was wound up pretty tight in the beginning but I loosend up and had a great show. The crowd was still into it and all I can say is thanks for putting up with the technical troubles. Friggin' Penny turned on a fog machine 1/2 way thru and the place filled up quick with it. I felt like I was at a KISS show or something. Pretty dopey and sloppy show, but we pulled thru. Got a lot of compliments afterwards which kinda surprised me. I'm glad the kids stuck it out with us. As long as they had fun.
Head Kick Riot was up next and played a strong set. They sound like a mix between punk and metal. Really kicked ass! Played the "Gynochologist" song which made my night. Those guys looked like they could kick all our asses into next Tuesday, but we're pretty cool and down to earth.
I thought it was another great time at the Legion Hall with no trouble until I walked into the mens room. Let's just saw someone carved something pretty offensive to most people in the wall. All I kept thinking was "great, there goes our chances of getting this hall again". It took Kite a long time to get back in this place. well over 8 months I believe. It's hard enough to get places for shows as is. And now it looked like our chances were blown yet again. The guys from Head Kick Rodeo were pretty upset and said they would take care of it. Pretty cryptic so I'll leave it at that. The guy from the Legion Hall was understanding about it which gave us all a sigh of relief. Kite got his deposit back and it looks like shows will still go on. Let's hope so!
