Generation TV Mixdown 2
Was able to go back up with Andy to work more on the mixes. We had to redo "Psychotherapist" since Phil noticed a drop out on the original mix. Andy then wanted to take the double tracked vocals off of "Idiot For You", at least on the main one. After that we worked on only 4 more songs. It really is a long and tedious process. By the time we got to "Generation TV" we all had ear fatigue. At least we have 3 copies on CD of what we have so far. Now we have to all listen to it and decide which mix is better, what we want to change or add, shit like that. I already assembled a copy of what I like in running order of the CD. 10 of the 14 songs. We'll go up next week and hopefully get this puppy done.
Since I've been so into the Black Crowes lately figured I'd write my history with this band...
I was familar with the early stuff from MTV and radio. A friend made me a compilation of the best stuff from the 1st 2 albums. I was really into the "Southern Harmony..." tracks. I ended up buying the "Who Killed That Bird Out On Your Windowsill" video (out of print now). I really liked not only the music but the attitude as well. The throwback to the classic bands.
I bought "Amorica" when it came out. I had the "banned" cover too. I remember at the time playing it a few times through but it didn't grab me as much as the last album. By the time "3 Snakes" came around my thinking was they were trying too hard to be a jam band not the classic rock sound I liked. I think I only played that tape 1 time. That was basically it. I kinda fell away from them.
When I heard tracks from "By Your Side" I was excited. This was the Crowes sound that got me into them, not the almost forced sounding (to my ears) "hippy band" that they had become. When I heard about the tour with Jimmy Page I was psyched. I bought the "Live at the Greek" CD online (where it was only sold at first). Never got a chance to see that tour as it didn't come to New Orleans (where I lived at the time) and it wound up cancelled anyway. The Crowes released 1 more album and went on their hiatus.
Fast forward again until earlier this year when a friend told me they were back and touring again. I wound up getting all the CD's used off Ebay to replace all my long gone cassettes. I don't know if it was the long layoff or my ears maturing, but I finally "got it". I couldn't believe how I overlooked "Amorica" and especially "3 Snakes". Hell I even dug their last album "Lions" which most of the hardcore fans dispise it seems.
I heard about the "secret shows" as "Mr. Crowes Garden". The closest one was over 3 hours away and I really wanted to go but had no one to go with. I wound up getting a copy and really got into it more. I was also lurking at their official site message board getting more and more info. I heard they were coming to Camden but as an opening act for Tom Petty so I passed on that. Glad I did 'coz not much longer after that it was announced they would have a headlining show at the Borgota casino in Atlantic City. Much more closer to home.
Problem was the tickets were $100 apiece! and that was general admission! I didn't care though and I'm glad I paid. I ended up taking a friend as a belated b-day present and that's when the fever really took over. I was blessed with one of their best shows of the Summer. And I was so close to the stage too only a few people back on Marc Ford's side. It was money well spent and one of the best concerts I've ever attended period.
I kept following all the details on the MB. It was great reading about the Fillmore run in August. Cindy managed to send me copies of all the shows except for the one that will be officially released. Once again blown away by this band. More dates kept being added and before I knew it I saw the 2 dates go up for the Tower Theater. I wanted to go to all the other surrounding area shows too but lack of funds put a damper on that.
The shows I saw last week were simply incredible! I'm bit by the bug bad! No one can touch these guys right now. There isn't a touring band out there that can. You have the crunch, the jams, quieter numbers, rare originals and covers performed effortlessly. I hope the band has been as energised about the future like the fanbase is. I simply don't want this to end! Chris Robinson is already confirmed to tour with Phil Lesh. I just hope the Crowes themselves comeback next year for more tours and a new album. This is an exciting time indeed! All I can say is...proud to be an Amorican!
