Cocksucking motherfucking shit shit shit.
Warren Zevon dies at the beginning of the week. Johnny Cash dies at the end of it. What the fuck? Is this some sort of sick 9/11 memorial week? Is this forever condemned to be the seven-day period in which Shit Happens?
I'm in Spokane for the next week, and I don't have access to my extensive Johnny Cash library. So during my lunch hour, I skipped over to the local Borders and picked up the Johnny Cash/Willie Nelson VH1 Storytellers album, which I'd been looking to get for a while. Today seemed like as good a day as any to pick it up.
I drove around for an hour in my rental car and listended to the whole thing. One of the songs on it is "Flesh and Blood," and Johnny tells the story of how he wrote it after spending a perfect day with his wife, June (who passed away in May of this year). This is one of the verses in the song:
"So when this day was ended
I was still not satisfied
For I knew ev'rything I touched
Would wither and would die
And love is all that will remain
And grow from all these seeds
"Mother Nature's quite a lady
But you're the one I need
Flesh and blood needs flesh and blood
And you're the one I need."
I don't think there's many occasions when it's permissible for a guy to admit to getting a bit teary, but if this isn't one of them, I'm turning in my cock tomorrow.
Anyway... I guess neither man's death should come as a shock. It just sucks that they both had to go so close to each other.
And I've got a request for anyone out there who either gives a damn about Warren Zevon or would like to see if they do: His last album, "The Wind," is currently sitting at #40 on the Billboard chart. Metallica's last craptastic effort, "St. Ass-ger," is at #41. I'd really love it if Warren could beat them for a third week straight, so if you'd all be so kind as to rush out and pick it up, I'd appreciate it. I don't think it's the kind of thing that Warren would give a damn about, but I do.
