I went to Boston this weekend for the first time in 4 years. I moved away 5 years ago and had been back only once. I stayed in Central Square with my old roommate/bandmate Cliff who is moving to LA with his band, Isis. It was a blast. My best friend from college and also former roommate/bandmate Justin, came up from NYC to hang out too. On friday night, we saw some friends, Bright, play at the Middle East Upstairs. It had been 5 years since I had seen the guys in the band. Roger from Mission Of Burma got up and played with them, and that was great. While I was filming it someone tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around and it was Mark, another friend from college who had moved to LA but happened to be there at the same time! I hadn't seen him in 4 years either. He was there to see someone play Downstairs and happened to wander into the Upsatirs. I'm glad he did. It would have sucked to have found out we were both there at the same time without running into each other.
Saturday we wandered around Boston and Cambridge, then spent several hours between saturday night and sunday afternoon playing Mortal Combat and trading mp3's. I copied about 50 cd's that they had at their house. I am a music junkie.
I miss Boston, and it was great to see so many old friends, but I'm glad to be where I am. I think I miss the east coast more than any particular city. I've always felt that that is where I fit in and am understood, even though I grew up in a Chicago suburb. And then there's the east coast girls. I'm a sucker for them. They're wicked awesome.
