I hang sheet rock, mostly for industrial buildings.
[A craftsman. Works with his hands.]
I live alone, Jamacia Plain. My ex-wife left me the house. Not a bad neighborhood, but it borders on one. and it's vulnerable. I have those old lever windows. I can't afford an alarm system. I've been broken into four times in the last two years. Drug addicts. They took everything. My TV, bike. My power tools, my stereo, guitar...
[A musician. He writes the songs.]
The day I finally had it was when I was building an end table for my dad. For the television remote and his nebulizer. he's got some asthema. I was half way done when some guy brakes in and steals my table saw. My fucking table saw. That was it. That was all I could take. I'm not into guns...
[Don't put that down.]
But I had to do something. So I rigged up this system. Just a jolt, you know. Send them a shock.
[Tell us about that night. You were home.]
Awake, actually, putting some dishes into the dish washer. I heard someone on the pourch and I thought, OK, here we go. I moved into the living room.
[And did you see him?]
Looking right in the window. He's this big spic you know.
[Latino?]
A drug addict. He was completely high. I could see it in his eyes even from inside the house.
[Then what happened?]
He started coming at the window, and If you've ever seen anyone on crystal meth or acid or whatever he was on, they're big, they're ugly and they feel invincible.
He started to pry open the window with a screwdriver or something and when he did that's it. the electricity went up the screwdriver and into his body. He completed the circuit.
[Must've been horrifying?]
Honestly, it wasn't. When I watched him it was like I was watching all the assholes who had ever broken into my house, taken my stuff, taken from me.
I mean, here was this guy finally getting what he deserved.
And what's amazing is that when someone is electrocuted, their blood literally boils. It boils inside the veins. And that's how the electricity flows through the body, through the veins.
[uh, huh.]
And even though he's a spic I could see his veins glowing right through his skin. He was being charred from the inside out. And I could smell his burning flesh from where I was standing. It smelled just like...a roast. A well-deserved, cooked roast. That's when I turned the alarm off. when he was good and done. It didn't take too long either,. Just like the microwave.
