The concert: AFI
The concert ended up being so-so. We left two and half hours ahead of time. We got there half an hour late because our Mapquest directions were incorrect and we got trapped in the one way streets of San Fran.
Well, we finally get there and it took about another 45 minutes to get parking which led to us jogging over to the concert hall on full bladders. We got there, got in and fortunately the opening band was still playing and they sucked anyway.
The purse saga:
We needed a place to put my purse and they didn't have a coat check. The auditorium had a maze of offices and so we went down a hall that had a marker in front of it to keep people out. It was deserted so we walked down three aisles. We found a bunch of stacked chairs and managed to squash my purse between two chairs in a stack of about 15 amongst may other stacks. On our way out, we stretched the no-entry gate to close off the entire aisle. ...Well, it worked and my purse was adequately hidden and was untouched when we returned. It took about another 40 minutes to devise this plan and explore the building. Sheesh!
Finally, the band comes on. A.F.I. (A Fire Inside). In terms of exciting things, we pushed our way through the crowd but didn't stay long because we were pressed up against others so hard of whom were jumping up and down that we were able to determine a serious safety risk (getting crushed, getting heat stroke, etc.) and left. I was also suffering some claustrophia in the crowd. The crowd was incredibly wild though and we went back down later. I went in the mosh pit but wasn't really moshing and had some of the punks throw me up over the crowd. I crowd surfed once and fell when the wave finished. I didn't get hurt, pulled myself up quickly and headed back for our balcony seating.
As for the music... It was AWFUL. A complete disappointment! The band played so loud that the setup crew had not adjusted the treble, bass, med correctly. It was static-y and sounded like a pair of blown out Bose speakers. The band was in costume and had A+ stage theatrics. The lighting was superb. The band sounded awful though and the music was just obnoxious. You also couldn't hear the tone correctly because the whole crowd was singing the WHOLE TIME. The grand finale was really nice though and they played their latest song. Most of the crowd who attended were emo kids.
So, all in all, it was worth the $40, but I've definitely been to better concerts. (NOFX, Seether and Audioslave were the best I've ever seen!) It was nice to go out in the city though so I guess we had a good time. Hunter enjoyed the show but shared the same feeling that the reverb and treble were unbalanced. So, that's the tale.
