Ok, back to my 2003 pics, but not for long
And if you want something more poignant, go back a day. Otherwise, stay tuned for a review of one of my favorite releases of 1995. I found this old copy of B-Side magazine (R.I.P.?) and saw this review. Its a bit too first-person for my taste, but whatever. Ill skip the bits that dont say anything like the introduction
Prick Prick
(Nothing/Interscope)
Prick mainman Kevin McMahon doesnt know whether he wants to be a fey glam rocker or an agro noisemiester and thats the beauty of this beast. Its aggroglam (? ed.) and thats amazingly cool: I can honestly say parts of this album are like nothing youve ever heard before. There are flashes of genuine mutant genius and Ill take that any day!
A song like Other People is a queer cross between Jeffery Lee Pierce, Lou Reed and Nine Inch Nails, showered with champaign and brutally trampled in the mud. Theres even a strange foray into Roxy Music territory on No Fair Fights. Another little gem, I Apoligise, can only be described as bizarre and severely fucked-up. Just lovely.
Theres the Ghost of Trent Reznor on this baby which is natural, since he produced part of it. Theres a few classic noises where you could hear Trent in the studio: hey, I have a noise that would sound cool right there. (Trent was in Kevins before he became a Pretty Hate machine - ed.) But dont worry: this album truly stands on its own warped art damage. the lyrics are quite clever but not too precious, and when Kevin gets a head of steam up hes wildly aggressive.
blah blah
Then he goes into all this shite about how no one will get it. Anyway, yeah. This guy had a band called Lucky Pierre back in Ohio and Trenty played some keys for him, leading you to wonder who actually pioneered their sound. Oh right, Skinny Puppyand the trail continues back to Gregorian Chant.
Its a disc that meant a lot to me for a while and I just wanted to share it with everyone.
