I've found I'm more cultured than I thought I was.
I mean I did'nt think I was some Roadkill-Eatin', Sister-Fuckin' Hayseed/Redneck/Hillbilly, but I did surprise myself Sunday morning!!
Sunday night was one of my nights off. And so, after I got off work from Saturday night on Sunday morning, I decided to drive down to North Little Rock to look at some of the Auto Dealerships, eat an early lunch at "Outback" and pick up some cologne at "Dilliard's", 'cause that's the only place that sells my favorite, "Tuscany pour Uomo Forte".
Someone had given me an "Aramis" gift set, long ago, that had a selection of five that they made at that time. And I got so many comments, from some very lovely ladies, on how good it smelled on me.
Naturally that convinced me to make it a favorite. Otherwise, truth to tell, I would'nt buy anything so expensive (around $60 for a 3.4oz bottle ). But when you look like I do, you use anything that'll help. And besides, it's so strong and I use so little of it, that a bottle that size will last me more than an entire year. Or, that's how I justify paying so much for cologne. But I digress.
Unfortunately, the "Forte" version of it has been Discontinued!!
Why is it, everytime I find something I like and/or I'm comfortable with, they get rid of it!!
But anyway, the sales lady convinced me to test some new ones. I spent the better part of a half-hour test some two dozen colognes.
What surprised me was that, about ten minutes in to it, I was picking up on subtle notes, undertones, and after-scents of the colognes I tested and making critique on them before I realized, "Hey! You sound like your a Connoiseur or something, you Hick!!" I was picking up on stuff before the salesgirl told me about it.
When did this happen?!?! Where in the Hell did I pick up this ability?!?! I had always thought of myself as just a normal, t-shirt-and-jeans, burger-and-fries, working-class-joe!! (And when most people see me at first glance, that' usually how I appear to them. I know this, because I've been told so.)
But then I realized where it came from.....Scotch Tasting!!!
I originally started drinking Scotch, because, as a youngster, I always thought "That's what 'Tough Guys' and 'Cool Guys' drink." (I try not to let stereo-types like that influence me anymore, but isn't it funny how often you find yourself doing just that.)
But I found that the cheaper stuff like "Johnnie Walker" and "Dewar's" tasted like shit!!
So I moved up and tried "J&B", which was better, but still not really good.
Then I tried "Cutty Sark", which is'nt too bad, but not good enough for me to drink all the time.
And then came "Chivas Regal"! That one's nice! Every once in a while I still get some of it.
Then I started paying attention to some of the words on the label, like "Blended". I started doing some research, and I found out about "Single-Malts".
So I tried this nice-and-cheap single malt called "McClelland's"! Actually, "McClelland's" offers about six different Single-Malts: Highland, Lowland, Speyside, Islay, etc.
It was better than the cheap blends, but it was still too harsh, so I put it up and forgot about it.
Later, I found it again, and decided "Why-the-Hell-not?".
Somehow, it tasted much, much better than the last time.
This, I later found out, was called "Letting it Breathe" or something similar.
And to make this very long story a little shorter, that's basically what got me started into "Scotch-Tasting"!
Now as your reading this, those of you who aren't connoiseur's are probably thinkin' that I think myself an expert.....FAR FROM IT!!
I'm still an Amateur!! I don't even really consider myself a true connoiseur!!! I have'nt even been to an official Scotch-Tasting or an informal one for that matter.
But it still surprised me on just how much I was picking up Sunday. Spice. Citrus. Pine. Tobacco. (Yes, some colognes actually use tobacco. Think about the last time you smelled pipe tobacco being smoked).
Floral tones. Earthy tones. Woody tones. Fruity tones.
I'm sure I did'nt catch everything, but I was picking up on and identifying stuff I never had before. WEIRD!
So, your Barbaric and Boorish friend, Khorsaun has a bit more civility and culture than even HE once thought he did!
And now that I've bored you all into slumber, I think I'll sign off.
Later.
(I need to find a better way to sign off my journals. Something more unique and me. But that's for another time. )
