We live in an old house. There's been a lot of changes to the house since it was built. The one that's driving me the most nuts right now is the old chimney. It's in the closet that I'm using as my pantry. The old owners sealed it off by screwing a stainless steal bowl over the opening. A few weeks ago that fell off and covered me and my pantry in soot. I cleaned it up (which was a HUGE mess because getting it wet just spread it more) and since then, I've had to clean up more a number of times since. MDF (finally) sealed it up - with a plastic bag and duct tape until we can find a more permanent solution. In doing so more soot scattered.
I hate cleaning it. But it's on my to do list.
The girls were just playing hide and go seek in the pantry.
They are filthy now.
Now I have to scrub soot off of the kitchen floor, the pantry, the kids, etc etc etc.

I have no idea what's the best way to seal it off - quickcrete and masonry would be pretty easy but it's a matter of getting everything out of the way so you can get up there to work.
