i'm going to buy myself flowers.
simply put, i deserve them.
i deserve
to be appreciated for all that i do
and deal with, in all its
overwhelming brevity.
for this reason, i'm stuck
at a crossroads.
should i pick the rose bouquet
or the assorted wild flowers?
the gerber daisies
or the lillies?
i know better
than to ever go as far
as considering the dahlia,
although typically a customer's bloom of choice.
i hate dahlias.
their petals look like
a thousand greedy little fingers
reaching
up towards some great escape,
coincidentally reminiscent of
a thousand greedy little fingers
of all those irking individuals
who can never -- and will never --
learn to appreciate
the hand they are dealt
in life.
in their lackluster minds,
the grass can always be greener;
the flowers always brighter.
they are always straining for
something better.
these people give each other flowers,
trying to cover up this state of discontent,
trying to be that something better.
someone else's best thing.
but me, i know that i am
truly
my own best thing.
it's for this reason,
for this enlightenment,
that i am buying myself flowers;
as long as they're not dahlias.
always,
-k.
