well since i cant seem to get my beloved SG to publish any of my movie reviews through submission to thier culture section (although Seven_C4 assures me that he's working on it), i guess i'll just have to post them here.
if your interested, you can check out other reviews to recent stuff that's out (and some stuff that's not out YET) at: fromthebalcony.com where i'm a contributing reviewer.
without further adieu, here's Passion of the Christ:

I think that with Braveheart director Mel Gibson showed us a sneak peek at his flair for drama and brutality that reaches the very DEPTHS of the human condition. His latest film, the controversial Passion of the Christ finishes the one-two punch with a right hook that not even Tyson could match. The buzz (or dark cloud depending on which camp youre in) surrounding this film is almost so obvious that it makes a stander-by kind of nauseous. We all know the plot here so a synopsis isnt necessary, and no, from what Ive read, he did NOT take liberties with what was written in the original screenplay more than 2000 years ago.
Many have denounced the film for its gore and overly graphic depiction of the ultra-violence Jesus endured during the last 12 hours of his life. Well, Passion has got plenty of that but is it too much? I dont really think so. These were brutal times and man was as savage then (if not more so) than he is now. One flip of the remote to Headline News will cure you of thinking that this violence is unrealistic. Omnipresent? Yes. Difficult to watch? At times. Unrealistic. No, not by a long shot.
Many people have labeled the film anti-Semitic. I disagree with this as well. Not ALL the Jews wanted Jesus crucified you know. Are we forgetting that Jesus WAS a Jew? Yikes people ease up. This movie doesnt depict Jews in a bad light. It illustrates what supposedly took place the Jews didnt kill Christ, they laid a heavy hand on the Romans to do so, and some of them were responsible. The Passion of the Christ is about as anti-Semitic as a documentary about The New England Patriots being called anti-football.
Funny how even two millennia ago religious upheaval in that region was as big a headache for governing non-resident bodies as it is today.
Whats getting lost here is that Gibson has made a fantastic and emotionally moving film. Gory? Yes. Violent? Yes. But were not telling the story of Strawberry Shortcake here. This film depicts the Son of God making the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of mankind. The unknowing, sinful, self-serving creatures that we almost ALL are and hes got our back. What we are telling is the greatest love story ever recorded. The Passion is well documented.
