Night 31 - The Exocist (1973)
Happy Halloween everybody
Chris Macneil is an actress working in a movie and during production her Daughter Regan begins to act strangely at first she seems unwell but soon her personality becomes more violent and aggressive, her condition continues to get worse and her mother suspects she is possessed when she shows abnormal strength, starts masturbating with a crucifix and turns her head backwards, Chris asks father Karras a priest for help and as he tries to talk to Regan the demon inside called Pazuzu claims to be the devil and will stay in this body until Regan is dead, convinced she's telling the truth Karras gets permission to carry out an exorcism if he'll work with experienced priest Father Merrin and together they try to force the Demon out, I always remember this movie being banned in the UK as I grew up and could only ever watch a dodgy copied vhs in really bad quality, when it eventually got released I was initially disappointed rewatching it but it's really grown on me as I've gotten older, it's incredibly tense as most of the action is set in a small room and it uses sound distortion and images to attack all your senses to full effect, I can only imagine how it must have felt to watch this originally in 1973 it must have felt super intense, most people talk about the spider walk, the crucifix scene or Regan's head turning backwards but for me the best parts are the frame flash images of the demon Pazuzo and also it's incredible creepy voice, it's like 3 or 4 distorted voices speaking at the same time mixed in with animal noises, also the actors had to endure real physical pain making this movie as digital effects were not available and everything had to be done practically and Linda Blair was amazing considering she was only just 14 years old when she made this, maybe it doesn't live up to it's reputation as the scariest movie ever but is is a genuinely scary movie with amazing practical effects a great story and super tense atmosphere so is the perfect choice for Halloween night
