A man riding a Yamaha R1 motorcycle at night stops next to a white van and gets off, he walks into a field and out of shot before returning with an unconscious woman over his shoulder, the woman is ley down in a completely white room as a naked girl stares down at her, the girl is an Alien imitating human form, she begins to strip the unconscious woman of her clothes before using them to dress herself and gets into the white van, she drives around the Glasgow highways looking for men who are on their own and when she finds somebody suitable she tries to make a conversation and flirts with them so they will get into the van with her where she takes them to a completely black room in an abandoned building, she slowly seduces the men by stripping while walking away and as they follow her taking off their own clothing in a trance like state they are swallowed up by the blackness which has become a liquid substance, once inside they are absorbed, digested and processed into fuel for the Aliens, as the Alien girl spends more time in her human body and has more contact with humans she begins to see herself as human and starts to develop emotions, while seducing another man she desides to set him free which puts her in life in great danger and forces her to run away, her emotions continue to grow and she develops a fascination with her body, she carefully and lovingly admires it in a mirror and falls in love with being a human girl but she also develops some negative emotions to like fear, confusion and loneliness as she can't adapt to human life like in her failed attempts to eat food and have sex, with nowhere left to run and completely alone she can no longer keep hold of her human form causing her a tragic end, Under the skin is one of my favourite movies it's directed by Jonathan Glazer who is known for his music videos like karma police by Radiohead and Rabbit in your headlights by unkle, also I have such huge respect for Scarlett Johansson for doing this she could take her pick of any Hollywood blockbuster and earn millions just standing infront of a green screen but she took a huge risk to star in what is basically an art movie for no money and she did her own nude scenes too in this for little reward so love her dedication and lack of superstar ego, it's full of subliminal messages like images of a fly trapped in the web or close up's of a worker ant as they are clues to the story, and it's also really smart how the music is used, it's minimal, cold and organised as she is on her mission at the start but as her emotions grow it becomes more warm, ethereal and expansive, it explores the theme of human identification and the imagery is beautiful and made with such thought and care to show the beauty and the darkness of our world as seen through Alien eyes, btw the guy Alien who rides the bike is Jeremy Mcwilliams who is an ex professional moto gp racer, I love motorcycles so really enjoyed the scenes of him blasting along the roads at high speed in the darkness of night with the only sound being that distinctive Yamaha engine noise and made me remember the times I'd get up super early when nobody else was awake to ride my bike at high speeds and not being able to feel my hands and feet because the cold air would cut straight through my race suit and I always remember that feeling of freedom,
This really is a special and unique film incredibly artistic and feels like a dream to watch, it's left open to interpretation and gives only hidden answers through it's imagary and soundscape but please give it a try 🙏 because it's a beautiful movie
