True crime writer Ellison is struggling to recapture his 15 minutes of fame that he had when he wrote a book that helped to solve a merder case, so he moves himself and his family into a house where a unsolved merder happened and hopes to work and solve the mystery where a family was found hanging from a garden tree and the youngest child is still missing, he finds some super 8 film in the loft of the new house and all have innocent sounding names like family hanging out or family barbecue for example but after watching they are actually snuff style movies showing the deaths of the family he's investigating and many more, he decides not to tell the police and instead work the evidence himself hoping he found a big break, after looking closer he see's occult like symbols and notices a masked man appearing in every film and discovers the masked man is a obscure pagan god called Bughuul who would kill entire families and steal the youngest child to keep their soul, fearing for his family he burns all the evidence and runs back to the their old house but while unpacking he discovers a box filled with more super 8 film only this time it's marked director's cut which shows exactly what happened and who killed the families, Sinister is one of my favourite horror movies it has an incredibly tense and edgy atmosphere the soundtrack and music helps so much and the way the film is shot and lighted so darkly adds so much eeriness, the main attraction to this movie are the super 8 films showing the murders and these are done super skillfully the way they slow down or trick you into believing you just watched something very graphic is amazing the soundtrack as I mentioned works so well in these scenes I'm a big fan of electronic distortion for atmosphere and hearing the old super 8 projector and the cracking and static on the film mixed with the warped chanting in the music really works for me, my favourite scenes is were Ellison is watching one of the movies on his laptop and freeze frames on an image of Bughuul and while he looks away from the screen to read something Bughuul's face turns to look at him, this is a perfect scary movie for Halloween and is only spoiled by a few pointless jump scares but it's one I think will generally scare people and it's definitely worth watching for those creepy super 8 movies
Enjoy the trailer 👻👻👻 and feel free to share your memories and stories of these movies if you've watched them or have others you'd like to share
