Night 26 - Hellraiser (1987)
Hellraiser contains a moment that stays with me for ever and is constantly in my imagination I will never forget the scene were Frank is killed but more of that later, one attachment I have to this movie of a puzzle box that opens the doors to the pleasures of heaven or hell is that the writer Clive Barker and the actors who play the cenobites are all from my home town Liverpool, Clive is really good at showing the blurry lines between finding pleasure in pain or chasing something dangerous to find excitement and his design of the cenobites (Angels to some, Demons to others) is grotesquely beautiful they have their clothing stitched into their exposed flesh and wear elements of torture like its jewellery he's also a very talented artist as well as a writer and that's obvious in his design which is a mixture of underground s&m club wear and tribal rituals, unlike lots of horror characters the cenobites are deadly serious and show little or no emotion which makes them seem even more threatening, the final scene were Frank is killed is my favorite moment in horror he is strung up by hooks and chains which stretch out his face and skin and makes him scream in agony but suddenly he stops screaming looks directly at the camera, licks his lips before saying Jesus wept and starts laughing
the actor Andrew Robinson was just supposed to scream but improvised this part and wouldn't tell anybody why, but apparently Jesus wept is the shortest passage in the bible and its supposed to make you wonder what was going through his mind at that moment, forget the cheap effects and the parts that don't fit because the images stay with you and there's lots of subtext if you like to look for that type of thing
