I decided to set myself a challenge and watch a horror movie each night in October as a build up towards Halloween, some movies are well known and others not so well known
Night 16 - Henry portrait of a serial killer (1986)
I remember hearing this movie mentioned but it taking me a long time to track it down before I first watched it many years ago, luckily it's much easier to find now, it was made in 1985 but didn't really get a full release until 1990, there is no flashyness about this movie it's just really minimal and gritty and feels quite voyeuristic, Henry is a nomadic serial killer who keeps moving around and kills all his victims in different ways to avoid being caught, he's staying with Otis an old friend from prison and his sister and the film focuses on how Henry convinces Otis to adopt his lifestyle and the murders they then commit, everything is done with gritty realism because of the low budget like the home invasion scene and how they record it and watch back in slow motion or the scene where Henry kills Otis and cuts up the body in the bathtub, it's based loosely on the fantasies and false confessions of real life serial killer Henry Lee Lucas who claimed he killed over 600 people and because its so minimal it's not the easiest movie to watch there's none of the showmanship you get with Hannibal Lector for example but if you like realistic serial killer movies it's worth a watch
