Night 12 - The Thing (1982)
I loved the Thing, It's so atmospheric and intense, it starts with a Norwegian helicopter chasing and shooting at a dog which escapes into an American research facility in Antarctica, the Dog runs to the American men and the Norwegian man is screaming at them trying to warn them but they shot him in self defence and shelter the dog, what they don't realise is the dog is actually a shape shifting alien that assimilates and impersonates any living thing it comes into contact with, the best thing about this movie is the atmosphere it creates as the Alien doesn't constantly jump scare it keeps itself hidden until its under threat so until it reveals itself you never know which of the men are assimilated and neither do they so the anxiety is alway high, the location is remote dark isolated and cold so you can feel the mistrust and paranoia of the men, when the Alien does show itself the special effects are spectacular and the eerie electronic soundtrack adds such suspense, it never really explains an ending and leaves things open so you never fully know if the two survivors at the end are human or infected and its fun to watch back and look for clues, I believe that both Childs and MacReady were both infected because in the final scene Childs is wearing a different colour coat ( it tears through your clothes as it absorbs and assimilates you) and MacReady's suggestion of what they should do next (Wait in the cold and see what happens) is exactly what he said the thing wants to do "it doesn't want to fight because its vulnerable out in the open, it just wants to go to sleep in the cold and wait for the rescue team to arrive" he also smirks when he gives Childs a drink from his bottle (earlier a team member said a small fragment is enough to infect a person so they should prepare their own meals and only eat from cans to avoid infection), surprisingly the movie was a flop as it came out shortly after feel good family movie E.T and was considered to dark and depressing but became a cult classic after its release on home video and dvd, the music is tense the effects are spectacular the acting is excellent and on edge and the story is fully of suspense and leaves you guessing so I'd highly recommend this one
