I decided to set myself a challenge and watch a horror movie each night in October as a build up towards Halloween, some movies are well known and others not so well known
Night 3 - Audition (1999)
Shigeharu is a single Dad that decides he wants to get married again but doesn't know how to find the right girl so a friend who works in television creates an idea to hold a mock audition for a fake movie this way Shigeharu can interview the applicants and choose who he likes best, he really likes a young girl called Asami and after dating for a while decides to ask her to marry him, they spend the night together and she demands him to pledge his love to her and nobody else!!!! (That part is important 😉) but when he wakes up she's completely disappeared, up to this point the movie is disguising itself as a awkward romance film but it's playing a trick and now starts to get much stranger and intense, Shigeharu tries to track down Asami and all leads are dead ends like the abandoned bar she used to work in, a man tells him the bar was shut down after the owner was brutally murdered so he goes home, he has a drink and collapses to the floor and when he wakes up realises he's been drugged by Asami, she tells him the drug keeps him completely paralysed but his nerves will remain active and she tortures him by sticking needles around his eyes and cutting off his feet with a wire saw, if you've seen a Takashi Miike movie before you'll know what to expect the torture scene is brutal and there's a nightmarish feel running through the whole movie, the good parts are its strangeness and unflinching brutality both of which are trademarks of Takashi Miike, the first half of the movie is slow and much like a romantic soap opera but it designed to be that way and makes the ending worth the wait, definitely worth watching is you like Asian cinema.
