Ive developed a habit of picking up hitch-hikers lately
I think i will have to make some adjustmetns to this habit though, yesterdays hitch-hiker was a bit sketchy
Sunday morning i was driving out through very rural VA when i saw a young hippie looking guy sitting on the side of the road with a large backpack. So i pulled over. And noticed he also had a very small puppy with him!! How could i not give long haired hippy boy bearing puppy a ride??
I gave him a ride for quite a ways, maybe an hour. He was from Cali and set out on a goal to see all 48 of the continental states, and had apparently seen a little over 20 so far. He had been hitch-hiking for 2 months. THe littlle puppy was so cute and she and my dog were playing. She kept chewing on Tempests face while Temp was trying to sniff and lick her. She was 6 weeks old. He found her abandoned in a box so he took her along with him. Tempest of course liked them both, and at one point decided that meant that she too should be sitting in his lap, so attempted to climb into it. She tried very unsuccesfully for a few minutes to get herself squished down into the space by his feet but it always left some body part smushed up on top of his leg. BUt she kept trying, and he just laughed.
That was a nice hitch-hiker.
Yesterday on my way back home i decided to stop again when i saw a woman on the side of the road waving rather anxiously at people. I figured she looked like someone who had some problem and really needed someone to help her get somewhere. BUt when i stop and she gets in and i ask her where she needs to get, she justs starts rambling on all incoherantly about going to this place or that place, and how she was going to go to her one aunts place and then she was supposed to give her a ride to the next place, but she needs $20 for that, so she has to get $20 before she goes there, and so maybe she should just try to get a ride up to the next town, but then the probelm with her car and she is hungry and something about a man giving her a ride and offering her money but then when he dropped her off and was going to pay her he wanted her to earn it first and she wasnt going to do that. So i ask her again, well where should i take you, just let me know where it is you need to go and ill see if i cant get you at least a bit closer to there. And then she goes on again about how she cant decided which place to go and she really needs that $20 before she goes to her aunts, and then she says "You got $20?" No, i dont have any money. "You got $10?" No, i really dont have any cash at all on me, a little bit of change maybe, but thats all i have. BUt i can get you where you need to go. "Nevermind, just drop me off right here." I hadnt even taken her a mile yet. Also, she looked like she had only just started to put he clothes on, the pants were still undone. I think maybe she did get that $20 from her last ride....
But giving rides to people who need it makes me feel good. And a lot better about the horrid little car im driving, cause its better than walking for hours in the hot sun. So using it to help people makes it seem like its not such a horrible little thing.
BUt from here on out i think ill have to up my hitch-hiker standards. Friendly hippies that are just happy to see the sights and get wherever you want to take them, yes. Sketchy traveling whores, no.
Ohh and there is this old man that i keep seeing along the same stretch of road who looks like hes about 80 and weighs as many pounds hobbling along with his cane and his thumb out. I keep wanting to pick him up but everytime i see him i have a car loaded with stuph and no room to offer him. BUt i am so picking him up next time i see him because hes just such a cute little old man!!
