This weeks blog homework is probably one of my most favorites so far! @lyxzen asked us: What are you favorite scents and why? (Bonus if you can figure out a way to make your blogs scratch 'n' sniff!)
I don't think I'm going to be able to make it a scratch and sniff so words are going to have to suffice.
Scent is one of the bodies most powerful senses. No really! Have you ever noticed that a particular scent can bring forth a rush of vivid memories? The smell of certain foods, sparking memories from when you were a child. Grandma's famous home baked meal! Perfumes and sprays reminding you of people- even the not so fond memories of an ex you used to date back in the day.
Why does scent bring forth such memories?
Well it's because the nerves run close to a certain part of your brain that is connected to emotional memory.
This blog homework sits close to my heart because one of my favorite scents in the whole world is the smell of the country.
Fresh country air, not tainted by fumes or sounds of the busy hustle and bustle of people as they rush to work, weaving in traffic. No, the country air is just open and fresh.
(Picture taken on a drive up to Tamworth. I literally pulled over on the side of the road to trek up a small trail to see this view.)
As most of you who follow my blogs will know that growing up I spent most of my childhood on a farm out in Tamworth with my Pop each holidays. Sadly my Pop passed away just before Christmas last year, leaving with me a mountain of memories I will forever treasure.
There is a particular smell in the country that is never forgetting and that is when a fresh storm blows in. When you're on top of a hill (which his property was) you could see the storm coming, clouds rolling in and even sometimes see in the distance the downpour of rain as you stayed dry.
The smell of fresh rain on a country property for me captures the best memories.
Growing up half in the country I was privileged to be around a lot of different animals and one I held particularly dear where horses. My pop had an old riding school Pony called Suzie who I would ride at any chance I could get before I got to big for her. Sadly Suzie passed away a few years ago but I've been out riding at local area's who do trail rides a few times and whenever I get close to the horses and climb up into the saddle, the leather encompassing, I always remember her and the farm.
(Picture taken in Tamworth when a next door neighbours horse had a foal. Too cute!!)
Another scent that I love and one that sparks many memories for me is the leather of horse saddles and bridles.
I've been around horses my whole life, my Pop having used to move his cattle on horse back for a while before changing to motorbike. He taught me how to tack up Suzie and taught me how to ride.
In his shed he had this really old saddle, nearly 100 years old that had been given to him years ago. The leather worn and run down and you could just tell that it had been well used.
(Picture taken from one of many trail rides- horse was Bonnie... the cheekiest lady I've ever met!)
