Sooooo....I'm back and god does it feel good! Not that I don't love to travel, I do, in fact, it's what I hope to do with my life...but let me just tell you a little something about the men in Mexico, or at least in the area surrounding Mexico City, which is where I spent the last three weeks: disgusting, disrespectful, machista, vulgar and dangerous are the first words that come to mind. Me? Bitter?
Maybe just a little. To put it succintly, it started out with just the catcalls, whistles, gross eighty year old men shouting "Hola, gringa, I looooove you!" and "Hey baby" while trying to touch me as I walked by...and I was wearing jeans and a loose t-shirt - not even anything particularly tight or revealing. And let me just say that in addition to the blowing kisses out of moving cars (which is surprisingly loud, due to, I'm sure, lots of practice) and whistles, they actually had modified car horns that whistled for them. Now, I didn't take this to be especially directed towards me, since it happened to almost every female who had reached puberty. What really made it bad was when during out second week a man stopped in his car and grabbed me and tried to pull me into the car with him. I of course pulled away and ran, as he shouted obscenities and slurs in Spanish at me. So yeah, I had a great time.
Ok, now that I'm done bitching, I did actually have some fun on the trip, especially the first week of diving. The dives were phenomenal!! On one of the dives I actually touched a shark - it was only about four feet long and a nurse shark, so relatively harmless, but still, it was fucking great! And then the next dive we saw three different sea turtles, including a baby one which was not in actuality that small. The last one we saw I managed to chase down against the current and as it swam below me I reached out and touched the top of it's shell. The only bad thing I touched was some fire coral, which left some pretty cool raised marks on my hand - and that was only because the current took me before I had a chance to turn around and I hit it mid turn.
I'm making that strange face to try to keep from laughing about how fucking ridiculous it is to be taking a picture of fire coral burns, but I actually really liked the way they felt all bumpy and stuff....
And of course we visited some ruins:
So in any case, I'm home and happy to be somewhere that I don't feel like I'm going to get kidnapped or gang raped around every corner.
And in a last ditch effort at politeness I will be trying to respond to everyone who wished me a happy birthday, although a month late so everyone is going to think I'm semi-retarded....

It is good to be in foreign locales with little access to the internet. I am glad that you seem to have had an enriching {smiles} experience.
