i've got insomnia and the moving-soon jitters.

how the fuck did _crash_ win for best picture at the oscars? these are things i think about when i can't sleep.

finally saw _brokeback mountain_ last night. i have no comment on how great or not it was, objectively speaking, but it totally hit me on some personal level. i was sobbing the entire time. something about men (not just gay men) and how stymied they can be by social pressures, how confused and penned by their own desires. generally speaking. i see this in "real" grownups; my friends' fathers etc. or at least i think i see it. more fodder for insonmia.

the tape player in my car is broken.

I haven't seen Crash but everyone whose film taste I respect has characterized it as rather mediocre. I did see Brokeback and liked it a lot--on a personal level, as you say--but as to whether it's "objectively good", there's really no such thing. Film taste is entirely subjective (as much as I hate to admit as a film buff and projectionist...). And apparently the Academy's taste leaned towards Crash, probably not because of the qualities of the film itself (or the actual filmmaking or story), but because it deals with race relations in America and they deem that to a more important issue to deal with in film than the legitimacy of love between two men.

Go figure!
