WHY ARE PEOPLE WITH TATTOOS, PIERCINGS, OR ALTERNATIVE STYLES DISCRIMINATED FOR WHAT THEY DO BY BIG CORPORATIONS?
Just to give you a little background of why Im asking the question: Ive been a hard worker since I was 13 years old. I started to help my mom at Michaels (an arts and crafts store) by just assisting her in her floral designs and then I started to make homecoming mums for local high schools. Since then, I have always been doing something, from helping my parents at work, to even non-paid charity events for a church I went through. So tell me, what has changed other than me having 7 years of experience underneath my belt? Well, Ill tell you what HAS changed drastically, my physical appearance.

I will be honest, before my first set for SG came out, I lost my job.. I worked at Freebirds World Burrito. I loved that job, but I fired to a secret shopper. Who I believed wrongly accused me, yet I digress the point is, I was dead broke. So, I started frantically looking for a job. I applied from fast food to fancy restaurants in Uptown to regular retail jobs. I had several interviews, but at most I went to, ESPECIALLY restaurants, all said I must cover all tattoos and hide all piercings. I wasnt looking in the right places; I know this now because I do have a good job.

Heres where the rant begins:
Am I an American citizen? Do I have 7 years of work, customer service, and even bigger responsibilities like assistant manager? Am I a college student? For the most part, Am I a law abiding citizen?
All these questions are answered with a huge YES.
Now, riddle me this
If an illegal immigrant can get a job, cant I?
If a felon can get a job, cant I?
If someone is in a wheelchair and can get a job, cant I?
If someone who is white, black, purple, or from any decent can get a job, cant I?

What did I do wrong? Where did I go wrong? I DID ABSOLUTLEY FUCKING NOTHING WRONG.
One of my favorite sayings, Dont judge me for having a tattoo because I dont judge you for not having one. You tell me, why do you think they didnt hire me? Because I got fired from ONE job prior, or because of the way I look? You give me your opinion and answer the question I asked first freely. I want to know everyones outlook.

P.S. Why am I weird or different? Well, I love that Im both of those, that I can embrace it, that my family can embrace it. And I think WHY Im different from everyone else is because I am not afraid to show EVERYTHING about me, if its good or bad. Because I learn from the bad and it makes me a stronger person for it. My ink, shows who I am, and Im not afraid to tell you the story behind every piece I have. The piercings? I like pain, Think Im weird? Well, I could say the same for you not having them, but Im a very open minded person, even to conservative republicans. SO WHY SHOULD I BE TREATED ANY DIFFERENTLY? Im not Christian, but whatever happened to the Golden Rule? Think about it

I just seen your new set and it is a great one, I loved it. in comment to this blog I can understand what you are saying. Tattoos have been around for thousands of years (don't have any myself YET) I have seen the discrimination before and don't like it either. I don't judge any person for who they are, lifestyle or anything else until I do get to know them and only then can I say I don't like them because... If I find that I can't trust them I won't have anything to do with them and that is only from what I know about them not just because of who/what they are or how they dress or what other people may say about them. Sure if someone tells me so and so is a thief or what not I would rather find out for myself than risk a chance of a not having a friendship. Yes if someone told me someone was a thief I would be leery of them and not tempt them to steal by leaving anything out.
Tattoos are a total different matter,I like and appreciate the artwork and know that whoever has them has made a commitment with them, they knew what they wanted and got it. it is not like make-up or hair style can't change it at a moments notice. Wish you the best in all that you may do and I truly thank you and appreciate you for sharing so much of yourself with me(SG).
Just wish I could remember the chemistry from high school and knew what molecule that one tattoo was.

I hear what you are saying, and I think thoughtful/meaningful tattoos can be beautiful. In the end, I understand that it's not my decision what you do to your body. Everyone doesn't think this way, and people often voice their opinions. Even subconsciously too, most people can't help it. If you showed up at work and your entire face was covered in purple ink or something, you may agree it might have some effect on people. You surely can't ask people to be robots and ignore your visual appearance.

Now there is the topic of actively discriminating, sure that's generally wrong. It makes sense to help people get a different perspective, if you have the time/energy for that. I have to say though, you cannot relate this to being born a certain way. The difference is choice. I will not discriminate against someone for the way they were born. However, if they decide not to brush their teeth, for example, I will. If you choose to get visible ink, it's something you have to accept: People will judge you. You will go crazy trying to change 7 billion people's opinions of your appearance. Let it roll off your lovely back.

Also, PlanNine is notorious for tagging SG's with "implants". I think he's wrong though smile
