Oh. My. Gawd. You guys, I ran. I know I’ve kind of mentioned my injuries in the past but you gotta understand why this is so huge for me.
Back in 2013 I broke my foot. It wasn’t a nasty injury or anything. I honestly just thought it was a bad sprain and didn’t bother to get it looked at for over a month. Eventually it started to feel way worse than it should have so I finally got it looked at and they confirmed a few minor fractures in the metatarsals. Fast forward a few more months and I start noticing this crunching feeling when I would walk so I went back to get it rechecked. Turns out the fractures didn’t heal properly and had slowly been destroying the cartilage in my whole foot. I’d need surgery to put it all back together.
Now, normally this wouldn’t normally be a big deal but add in the diabetes and we had a huge problem. Diabetes and foot injuries can be really serious because our ability to heal is seriously diminished. We had to make sure I was as healthy as possible before the operation. As I’m waiting to get the approval for that, I slipped on the stairs in my house. My walking cast stayed while the rest of me twisted and I ended up with a spiral fracture of my tibia and fibula. No surgery until that healed. Eventually it did but there was another issue.
I ended up needing two more operations on my foot over the next two years. It was months before I could even walk without a cast. I haven’t been able to run since 2013. Now, I didn’t run a marathon or anything. It was maybe 20 yards down the beach but it was the most I’ve done in 8 years. It was so goddamn exciting.
