So, I've survived the first week of college here in Athens, Ohio at the gorgeous Ohio University, and I am still going strong. I've had a variety of interesting experiences, and relaying them to you all individually in a detailed, efficient manner would be nearly impossible (not to mention pretty fucking exhausting). So, I will attempt to summarize, but if you know me, you also know that summarization is not one of my strong points.
I made college buddies almost immediately. My roommate's friend from home, Jill, is awesome. She lives right around the corner from Stephanie and me. She is giddy and bubbly and passionate and loves 95% of everything I love, including Weezer, band t-shirts, dancing crazily, dancing crazily to Weezer whilst fashioning band t-shirts... She enjoys all of my weird tendencies, and she finds me quite delightful. He room has an attractive/trendy vibe, what with the rainbow curtains and hot pink rug, and we usually hang out in there. Drew is a riot. He and I have essentially nothing in common on the surface: he enjoys name brand clothing, CNN news, marching bands, and poppy radio music. But he has the same appreciation for things that I do. For instance, we both have similar views on drugs/alcohol, religion, etc. We also enjoy some of the same activities, like taking walks around campus at night, shopping for posters, and hanging out in coffee shops. He and I look forward to each mealtime.
My classes are rather nice. On Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:10-10AM, I have Intro to Arts. The professor looks a little like Quentin Tarentino with lighter hair. We discuss art (obviously), and it's usually pretty interesting. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 1:10-2PM, (and Fridays from 1:10-3PM) I have Intro to Vico (or Visual Communication). It's a pretty big class, and we discuss all aspects of visual communication. Right now we're doing the basics like the color spectrum and shiznit. Also on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I have Public Speaking, and I have this class with Jill, so it's not so bad. Our professor is a young female grad student from Kenya. She has a very thick accent, and she speaks softly, so it's often difficult to know what the hell is going on in that class. Plus it's pretty boring. We talk about "no shit Sherlock" type of stuff. EXAMPLE: I might read something in the textbook that goes like, "When speaking in front of a crowd, try to maintain erect posture. Gesturing helps, and make sure that you understand your audience." <-- I made that up off the top of my head, but you get the idea. BLAH. Also on Tuesdays and Thursdays (these are full days for me) from 5:10-7PM, I have Intro to Viscom Skills. This is essentially a photography class. We bring our cameras to each class and discuss basic camera functions. Our professor is a young guy named Chad, and he is quite the prestigious photographer. He's charismatic, AND he likes U2, so we get along well. That class, while it's the most educational/relative to my major and the most fun, is also going to be the most work. For instance, I have 22 photos due on Thursday. Basically, he gave us a list of 22 phrases like love, fear, window, shiny, etc. and we are suppose to take photos illustrating these concepts and such. Some of them are easy. For instance, I had to take a picture of a female classmate from that class, someone's tattoo, someone I know, someone I don't know... yada yada. I like taking pictures, but sometimes it's hard when I'm feeling apathetic/not inspired (which is often, I'm afraid). On Wednesdays, and only Wednesdays (thank God) I have a dumb ass University College class. We write journals and discuss college. Cool. So those are my classes in a nutshell.
I have encountered some problems. One of them is eating. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, because I have a shit ton o' classes, I bypass all the mealtimes. Therefore, I starve. I snack, but I starve. I also have trouble sleeping on Sunday nights for some reason. The rest of the time, I am thoroughly exhausted, and I sleep just fine. But on Mondays (today), I'm fucking draggin'. Another problem is that apparently I am a shitty shopper with no attention to detail. Stephanie and I bought rugs, curtains, a mirror, and a TV stand for our room without really noticing that the rugs were too small, the curtains were the wrong kind for our windows, we didn't have anything durable to mount the mirrors, and no tools to assemble the TV stand. We did manage to get a screwdriver for the stand, and the curtains look okay. We need a fucking area rug, and the mirror is just kind of leaning against the wall. Because we're dumb. Also dumb is my fucking debit card, which keeps getting denied everywhere. I have money in my account, so I've been writing checks, but I don't know what the fuck is wrong with my card. The bank is supposed to call me today. Another problem I have is shaving my legs. Basically, I'm not going to do that very often here just because shaving + standing in those tiny showers = discomfort. Yet another problem is our dry erase board on our door, and the fucktards that like to draw penises on it every day. But I solved this problem by hiding the dry erase marker so that only confidential personnel can access it. (Drew still draws penises sometimes.) I taped a shitload of magazine clippings to the door as well, and someone ripped down Elton John. I was pretty upset initially, but I am recuperating.
ALSO, AND THIS IS PRETTY OBVIOUS, BUT EVERYONE FUCKING PARTIES, AND IT'S RIDIC. At least I have some cool nonpartying friends.
I miss Dan. And my parents and kitties and sister. And having a bathroom in my abode. And friends. And taking baths so that I can shave my legs comfortably. And my Cougar, which probably is still rather sick. Bah.
So anyways, that's all I have for now. I mean, I do actually have more, but I have gone on long enough. In conclusion, college is good times. You should go if you get the chance and all.
The end.
