I was reading this article on paper on Norse Drinking Traditions and I was looking at the Havamal that was used as a dressing in the article. It was in old Norse and English... while reading the old Norse portions I realized that what was translated doesn't match the words..

being what caught my attention... gott is old Norse for Good. it's used twice in this but is translated as
Less good then they say/ for the sons of men
is the drinking often of ale.
now I don't see the word good being used twice... This is why I don't trust translations, because it isn't the worse translated in context, it's translated in the authors narrative.
Thus I went to work using my limited knowledge of Icelandic... other translation of the same text and some of my own detective work with my other sources and found that two things that intrigued me... Translations is tough and I give extreme respect to people that can do it in their head. And two I learned something interesting about the phrase Alda Sunum.
Near as I can tell it translates literally as
Naughty elves more good/ as good regards
ale waves of sons.
which is why you have to use context and knowledge to translate it.
Esa seems to be a word used to describe things that aren't really good. It was a kinda of Elf that stole things and created havoc.
thus I used it as More harm then good
next you have as good regards which means just that.. but in context it in English is just changes location.
lastly you have Ale waves of sons.
This is translated with ale going to as good regards, and Waves of sons is turned to Sons of Man, or Mortal Men.
I found this neat because the Creation of Men happened on a Beach as Odin and his brother walked. This Men were literally sons of waves. which also works.
So I read the whole verse (this was only part of it.)
It does more harm then good, In regards to
the drinking of ale by the Sons of Waves
making them unable to think the more they drink.
and hinders their abilities as men.
I'm no scholar, but I was kinda proud of my self, sadly those four lines took me 2 hours. lol.
