The past week inFamous was released exclusive to the PS3, it's been getting very good reviews averaging a 9/10 on most sites.
Initially I loved it, finding it to be just a fun game to play, and once I finish the game it I will be like that again. Sadly the game itself has some major flaws and I just don't understand why so many people are giving it such high reviews, 7s and 8s I can understand but not 8s and 9s.
The game play is great, and the level design is well done, even the story seems to be decent and based on these elements alone it's a great game. Being a sandbox game the graphics are good as well, however the blur effect at distance makes long shots tough at times, and the limited number of side missions are a pain in the ass. So Far I've done 20+ missions but with only 9 or 10 different missions, it gets old fast, and some of them are just a pain. One missions I keep restarting not because, I like it, but because I've yet to figure out how to stop the guys from running, when it take 5 to 6 shots to get them back to the group. and if you have to run in different directions, well, one will always get away. This type of thing on the PC wouldn't be such an issue because you could use your mouse to Aim for head shots every time and do it in two. Of course the fact that pedestrians keep running towards the gun fire instead of away also doesn't help. To add to this the Enemy AI have dead aim from extreme distance, often times early on, well outside of your own range. Making hiding and cover very important, and though understandable as to way, it's more then a little annoying to have to take a few minutes to figure out where the shots are even coming from.
Pedestrian AI is stupid beyond stupid, just randomly falling down, at one point I healed a person only to watch them walk two steps and fall down again. Car keep driving along waiting patiently for the flipped over, burned out hulk of another car, to drive away.
Buildings all look the same, when I got to the second island I thought there would be different buildings but nope, just the same ones from the first in a different layout. Now to be fair there are several different types of buildings, but by the time you get to the second island they start looking the same.
These issues hinder the game as an immersive experience, and prevent a truly and a totally enjoyable experience. There are other minor issues, like Cars whose drives disappear, or people falling through the world. But those are minor issues, and I am much more concerned with me sighing when I realize that I have to do this crappy mission again.
Everything in this game would be forgivable if only there were more side missions. I figure by the time I'm done I will have done several of these upwards of 10 times, as I've done one 3 times at least already
It's a good game and worth buying but if I had to give it a score it would only be a 7.5/10 the repetitive and boring side missions, just hurt the game as a whole. Mix into that the graphical issues, and AI issues, and this game just isn't the killer app of the PS3.
Though the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta code does make this a decent buy for the next month
