OH, i forgot to review the concert on friday:
The Cure.
pretty much that's saying enough right there, but i'll continue.
It wasn't so much as a Cure concert as just a musical event. Rather than have your normal 2 opening bands before the main event, the show started at 5pm and had a new band ever half hour. It was a collection of bands The Cure liked and wanted to share with the audience.
They had set up two stages, primary and secondary. a band would start on the first stage, do their 30 minute set, ad then the next band would start on the second stage. that way you didn't miss anything, and there was plenty of set up time.
Some of the bands that played:
Mogwai: alright, but mainly a jam band, no lyrics they just sort of played. it was essentially background music. they played pretty early on.
Auf Der Mauer: she was pretty good, sounded a lot like early Rush i felt. Tom Sawyer and the like.
The Rapture: This was my favorite of the non-Cure bands. clearly a LOT of heavy Cure influence here, however much they may try to deny it. any band that uses a cowbell is a-ok in my book. "I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell"
Interpol: Also a solid band, i don't remember much about their performance anymore, except that they were really well dressed, and that Carlos, the bassist, looked suspiciously like Crispin Glover.
Muse: They were the final act before the Cure. Also pretty rockin stuff. definitely got everyone in the mood for the main act.
The Cure played from 9-11:30 pretty much straight. a fair amount of stuff off their new album, and SO many of their greatest hits it was glorious. Robert SMith was actually amazingly animated (for Robert Smith). He would occasionally jump into a quick dance step, or any motion actually, that ilicited so much rave from the audience, it was amazing. Even Roger cracked a smile at one point. totally un-heard of.
Such an amazing time, you have no idea. Even all the angsty kids were so sublimely happy, it was deliciously ironic.
if you don't believe me, here are some other folks reviews.
I would totally go again.
