Day Of Remembrance?
Hi everyone. I am kinda saddened b/c this is the first Sept. 11 since the attacks where I haven't felt a sense of community. Every other year I've seen people on the streets holding signs telling each other to "Remember." And they do. And they are kind to each other. More so than any other time w/the possible exception of Christmas. Because they remember how much the US came together in the aftermath of 9/11/01, and do their best to re-create that feeling, and to remember the victims. Not just of the NYC attacks, but of the violence in Iraq and Afghanistan which followed.
I never want to forget the way I felt then. I never want ANYBODY to forget the way they felt then. I want people to remember the horror and sadness which eventually led to a renewed appreciation for our freedom and towards our fellow US citizens.
I have yet to see people who are treating today differently from any other (except on the news, which just isn't the same). Perhaps the difference is b/c this is the first year I've been in LA for Sept. 11, rather than in Bremerton (which happens to be a Navy town). But, I intend to find that sense of community, even here in big/bad LA.
I am going to ride the bus all over the city this afternoon, and talk to strangers about their feelings on this day. I am going to find as many other people as I can who remember and care as much as I do. I am going to find the people waving flags and carrying banners expressing their sorrow/patriotism/appreciation/whatever...And I am going to give them all hugs and say, "Thank you for remembering. You rock."...I just want to see for myself that people still care. And I want those people to know that I appreciate them for having the strength to fight the disease of apathy which seems to spread so quickly and easily in our country.
If you guys see and/or plan to do anything in observance of Sept. 11, PLEASE post about it here (or, if you don't feel comfy doing that, please email me your story). It would mean an awfully lot to me if you did.
Thank you in advance. And please...Always Remember.
Peace and love, Kasey/Ravyn/Whatever
