This is my place to write whatever I want to write, and I want to write a about the film I just watched.
The Renaissance
First I must say that the animation is astounding. It was CG done in black and white. I don't mean grayscale, I mean black and white. A few shots have a shade of gray here and there, but most of the film is black and white. It is really quite amazing how the outlines of half of a persons face can show so much detail. It was nice to have to think about how the characters really look, I think Bislane has dark hair and dark eyes whereas her sister is blonde with either blue or green eyes, but it was all black and white so who knows? Unlike most films it engages the audience in that the viewer has to actively think about what the characters look like, which is a great technique to keep the audience's attention during the less exciting plot points. The animation was not mearly entertainment, but an active participation in art for the audience.
Then there's the plot. I won't give anything away here, so no spoiler warnings are necessary. The film was a sci-fi thriller, which are not usually my genre of choice, but there exist a few good ones. This is one of the good ones. Pretty much it's a kidknapping mystery thingy. Yeah, it really doesn't sound that great and I wasn't really impressed during the first half of the film, but by the end I was enthralled.
"Life is meaningless without death."
This may be a year after the film's release, but great cinema never goes bad. Oh, and the DVD release in the States is set for July 24. I'll be picking up a copy for sure.
