I'm not an expert by any means, but your body produces melatonin when it's dark to help you sleep. It helps the circadian rhythm. So if you have trouble sleeping, melatonin can help depending on whats affecting your sleep. A quick Google tells me you need a prescription for it in the UK. It's available over the counter here, but I guess you have stricter laws in the UK.
