Time for an update, although I doubt anything will ever beat the Festival of the Pants post. That event was the brainchild of my friend Danea and his friend Dave. There may be sequel sometime soon. I think it should be bigger, much bigger, but at the same time, I don't think it would work if it got too out of hand. If it does become a huge annual thing, I can take pride in saying I was one of the originals.
Anywho, there has been other stuff going on in my life. On wednesday I went to see the Aquabats. If you've never heard of them, they are an innovative ska band with a heavy super hero chique. Live they are like a saturday morning cartoon mixed with a rock concert. My buddies and I went as a super hero group we decided to call the Ska-Vengers. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera so there are no pictures of us in our glory. We were:
Homeless Man: (That's me) This is a character I created in 8th grade. He wears a black mask, a trenchcoat, and a fedora, and helps the most downtrodden of society.
Super Rudy A stylish Crime fighter who wears a checkered mask, white shirt and black tie, shorts, and a checkered fedora. He is known for his dry wit, hot temper, and ability to "Pick it up, Pick it up, Pick it up!"
Tommy Two Tone Decked out in his black tie and mask and white shirt, Tommy Two Tone is the only absolute in a harsh grey world. The saddest of the Ska-Vengers, he frequently keeps to himself.
Senor Motherfucker A luchador from south of the border, Sr. Motherfucker is a sensitive but brave man, who will never shy away from a fight. He wears checkered pants, a checkered mask, and a yellow shirt with a black tie.
Wow, I just made up most of those back stories. That might make a pretty good comic book.
The second opening band, the Phenomenauts, were awesome. Think a rock-a-billy Devo with an emphasis on sci fi stage theatrics. They deserver your support. Check them out here.
In other music news, my band, which is a ska band with two guitarists and at this point no horns, broke into a 5 minute blues jam in the middle of one of our songs, and it was some of the best stuff we have played. For this reason, I think we should mix our ska with other brands of music.
Speaking of blues, I have been listening to a whole bunch of Elmore James. Songs like "Anna Lee," "Shake Your Money Maker," and "Stranger Blues" make me want to grab a glass bottle and learn slide guitar. Some interesting facts about Mr. James:
1. He was a protege of Robert Johnson.
2. He was an electrician before he was a blues man, who primarily worked with amps. By tweaking his amplifiers, he was basically the first musician to created distorted sounds.
3. BB King and Jimi Hendrix have considered him influences.
That's all for now. This was a very music heavy post.
Cheers,
Ch
