The animals know things that we dont. They have been gathering like something out of Hitchcock for years now, waiting and watching.
First it was deer. It used to be that sighting a deer was a something that caused everyone to stop and gape. All we knew about deer was from watching Bambi.
Theyre not Bambi anymore; they are everywhereeven roaming deep into the heart of the nations capitol--and they have begun their suicide war against Homo Industrialis, throwing themselves in front of autos with ever increasing violence, destroying crops, uprooting gardens. But this was only the beginning.
Next came the Bears. Many of the Bears give the appearance of succumbing to the decadent Human lifestyle. Some do-gooder activists have even worried about Bears getting too fat, eating from Dumpsters behind fast food restaurants. But there is method to their madness as this has turned them from daytime foragers to nighttime scavengers. Now, camouflaged and accustomed to the dark, they await their ultimate mission.
The latest to appear are Coyotes who, in recent years have spread from their base camps in the Pacific Northwest to infiltrate urban areas across the country. Humans, lulled to sleep by years of Wile E Coyote propaganda films, do not realize how cunning and resourceful they are. Others can be seen to: red-tailed hawks, black snakes, foxes.
The animals are massing, with more ominous intent as each year passes. I do not know why, but sometimes in the mists of evening I have a vision; they are waiting for The One--the second coming of some animal long extinct, rising from the dead, who will lead them in glorious battle, to the final judgment of all that humans have done. The Garden will return and the Kingdom of Gaia will once again rule over the Earth.
