I think I'm finally adjusting to the night shift. Or at least the idea of it, since I still can't seem to get to sleep before dawn or up and about before almost time to go back into work. Maybe in a larger city that would be less of a problem with people and businesses and all sorts of life going on at all hours. But I'm in a small town of around 30,000 and the only places open when I walk out of the office are a couple fast food joints on opposite ends of town, some gas stations where you have to buy drinks, snacks or whatever else you want via a slot and a cashier leaning in to hear you from behind bullet-proof glass, and porn shops haunted by closet-cases with family vans. Oh, and the cops with their annoying driver's side spotlights.
All in all, when I leave work the only other people out are people I really don't want to have anything to do with.
As for work itself...Meh. Today I did a whole lot of nothing for the most part. It's a rotating schedule that determines which of us in charge of handling the next day's newspaper and the person in charge tonight does almost the whole thing herself. So I sat at my computer, listened to Isis and watched videos on Youtube ranging from episodes of the old Fox series Werewolf to ancient performances by Black Flag, Bad Brains, the Dead Boys, Fear and the Dead Kennedys. I got paid for all of it, too. Kind of funny in a way, but not as much as it used to be. I like being productive. Maybe it's another sign of old age and, ugh, maturity.
At least I finally get to see Star Trek this coming afternoon. I hear it's pretty good.
