Went out saw Watchmen today. There's no doubt in my mind I'll be seeing it again before this next week is out..and at least one more time beyond that. The story was handled beautifully, the film looked magnificent, Rorschach was fucking perfect and the altered ending didn't phase me one bit.
Definitely not your typical comic book movie. The violence was brutal (though I'd argue Snyder has been more graphic in his other films) and the vigilante/hero archetype was thoroughly deconstructed and put on display, psychotic warts and all.
Some people might gripe about the films two and a half hour running time, but I'm ready for the nearly four hour director's cut NOW. I'm probably not the only one. Other fans of the book could be heard in the crowd when their favorite scenes would come up.
Like I expected, some people who hadn't read the book walked out disappointed - some confused, some angry, some disturbed and some apologizing to dates they'd taken along. (I bet the Silk Spectre/Comedian scene was especially hard for the latter.) One guy from an obvious double date pointed at his buddy and said, "So...uh...just so you know, I didn't pick that movie. Don't blame me." Another guy said it was the longest two and a half hours of his life.
I can understand that..to some extent anyway. The film was made for fans of the book and everyone else is probably going to struggle to understand what's going on. They should have seen that stupid Mall Cop movie instead. It was still playing just down the hall.
